    A Second, Disc-Less & Cheaper Version in Development Called Lockhart
    In June, Microsoft announced Project Scarlett, a new iteration of the Xbox that the company said would “set a new bar for console power, speed and performance.” What Microsoft didn’t say is that it is also working on a lower-cost, disc-less version of Scarlett, code-named Lockhart, according to four people briefed on the company’s plans.

    If those names sound familiar, that’s because they’ve been floating around for a while. The earliest rumors about Microsoft’s next-gen roadmap, circa 2018, suggested that Project Scarlett would consist of two Xbox models: the high-performance Anaconda and the lower-end Lockhart. In June, however, Microsoft announced that Scarlett was a single, high-end console, which led to speculation and then press reports that Lockhart had been canceled. But Kotaku has learned that Lockhart is in fact still in the works as a cheaper, digital-only alternative to Scarlett, as the original rumors suggested.

    When speaking to Kotaku, one game developer briefed on Lockhart analogized it to the PlayStation 4 Pro in terms of raw graphical power, although there are other key differences that might make up for that. Lockhart is said to have a solid-state drive, like both Anaconda and Sony’s upcoming PlayStation 5, which is expected to have a significant impact on loading times. Developers briefed on Lockhart also say it has a faster CPU than any current video game console, which could allow for higher frame-rates, although there are other factors that might not become clear until the console is completely finalized, such as clock speed and cooling.

    Microsoft’s ideal target performances are said to be 4K resolution and 60 frames-per-second on Anaconda and 1440p resolution and 60 frames-per-second on Lockhart.

    I can already see the photos of people's cats trying to sit on top, absorbing all the heat the system is trying to exhaust. That and I don't have the space for something that tall in my current setup, and I doubt it'll work as well thermal-wise on its side.

    Watched an interview with someone on youtube who talked to Phill Spencer about it, and he said it can lay on its side as well. So can be either standing like in the picture or laying down thankfully. I was thinking the same thing you were when I saw it.

    Checked out a YT video from Gameranx on this and I love the statement "The GPU is really beefy." A few seconds later "We don't know what GPU is being used".

    edit: Oh boy. Same review and they said something about 120 fps and 8k resolution. Of course this will be utilizing variable refresh rate. I am very skeptical on this seeing as at the present time to achieve 55 to 60 fps at 4k takes a $600+ GPU alone. It will be interesting to see what the actual parts used are and what the prices do once this is released.

    It's going to be a series of a frequent amount of cheats involving dynamic resolution, image reconstruction from a lower-rez source, and whatever AMD's equivalent of nVidia's VRS (variable rate shading) is where it'll render select portions of the scene at a lower fidelity than others that's imperceptible in motion. I will be absolutely baffled if the new consoles don't have a VRS equivalent. Never going to have that pristine 4k image quality at higher framerates.

    Bolded is what I was trying to recall seeing in a video this last week. I mean, it's an ok gimmick I guess. What I'm curious about is if that will cause any tearing. For me personally, tearing is probably my biggest pet peeve in gaming. For me it can ruin the experience.

    Depends how aggressive/proactive a game's load management code is to dumb the visuals when it hits a performance threshold that threatens to dip under 60. The other thing to note is the Xbox 1X has FreeSync/VariableRefreshRate support with its HDMI2.1 connector, but it barely goes used in games from what I read, which can either be a case of hardly any TVs support it in the first place (most don't), or that original XB1/XB1-S uses can't make use of it.

    MS could potential push devs for supporting it on the Series X for 60~fps targeted titles since every console will have it on the base unit this time around, which solves tearing for people with compatible displays, and then just employ some other measure for regular TVs like adaptive v-sync.

    “We’ve never really tried to limit what developers are trying to do on our platform, whether it’s 60 frames per second on Xbox 360 or people doing 4K, 60 [frames-per-second] now on Xbox One X,” he continued. “We want to give developers the tools to go try things that they want to go try on any of the hardware platforms and capability can be there for them to go try things.

    “I think we’ve reached a point with Xbox One X in the generation where games look amazing, and there’s always work we can do to look more amazing. But I want games to feel as amazing as they look. We don’t have that in today’s generation, mainly because the CPU is underpowered relative to the GPU that’s in the box in order to reach a feel and frame rate and kind of consistency or variable refresh rate and other things that we want.

    “As we were looking at the future, the feel of the games was definitely something that we wanted to have more focus on, not just throwing more pixels up on the screen.”

    • HDMI 2.1 Innovation: We’ve partnered with the HDMI forum and TV manufacturers to enable the best gaming experience through features such as Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR).     The Xbox One was just a Windows 8 PC (later updated to Windows 10) with a different GUI slapped on.
