Nope.
That was the plan. But Xenosaga diverged completely off that path because of IP issues and only did the 3 games. It's just a spiritual successor.
No it's pretty clear that XB1 is not a harem game. You made a bad argument. Let it go.
I mean XB2 isn't either by that metric because a large female cast doesn't necessarily mean harem if there's only two legitimate love interests for Rex.
My point is that while Blade had more complete storylines that were told fully rather than through abridged narration, the character writing and development also became decreasingly complex. Less things happen in the actual gameplay and the story relies on audience familiarity with tropes and archetypes to fill in the blanks. Like why are Shulk and Fiora a romance? Childhood friends. Why does Rex develop feelings for the haughty Mythra? Because she's a tsundere. Things proceed in Blade as if we are supposed to take these progressions for granted. Just like a harem anime.
Fei and Elly are better written as a romance because you actually walk through how they develop feelings for each other, how they internalize that, and how they allow their feelings to change themselves (and thus move the plot). That sort of development was absent in Blade entries.Spoiler: show

Xenoblade suffers from not having enough Reyn time.
Which does go in line with with character development becoming less complex.
I've never played 2, how does it compare to 3? I was planning on doing BoF3 after I wrap up Xenogears.
Love BOF3 but the diagonal orientation of the map makes it suck on touchscreens
I loved Breath of Fire 3, I actually played it right before I did my Xenogears replay and it definitely held up a lot better for me.
My takeaway from it is that it knew it wasn't going to compete with Final Fantasy VII so it instead it leaned into what it had and made a completely different kind of game instead of emulating what was popular at the time. Plus a DAMN good fishing game.
Breath of Fire 2 is one of the top 5 SNES games but is also like a tragedy generator for every character.
On that scale:
1. Chrono Trigger
2. Final Fantasy VI
3. Breath of Fire II
4. Super Mario RPG
If I could round out this list #5 would be Lufia II or Earthbound.

Magus' theme is so great.
I actually just bought CT on Steam yesterday to start yet another replay of an old game. Maybe I'll just play oldies in 2021. Don't know if anything big is coming out this year.
Is there any list of best SNES RPGs that doesn't have Chrono Trigger at the top?
