Fyi, before you all get too excited, you only get the $125 if you already pay for Equifax' credit monitoring (which is $20/month). If not all you get is free monitoring for a few years, no money. T'was a real bummer when I tried to file my claim.

Does not specify that it has to be equifax's monitoring.

Yeah, what ksandras said. Pretty much every credit card has free credit monitoring. I have it from discover and Chase.

Mint, the budget app, also gives free credit monitoring. That alone should qualify anyone who wants to quickly sign up for it.

Credit Karma counts and is also free. And it’s something everyone should be using already anyway.

No one is getting that $125.

As part of the settlement, consumers whose data was compromised could request up to $125 or free credit monitoring services. The potential for a quick payout generated major interest, but only $31 million of the settlement was set aside for cash payouts, meaning each payout could be far smaller than $125, depending on how many people request one.

In a blog post today, the FTC tempered expectations. “A large number of claims for cash instead of credit monitoring means only one thing: each person who takes the money option will wind up only getting a small amount of money,” the agency said. “Nowhere near the $125 they could have gotten if there hadn’t been such an enormous number of claims filed.

The agency is encouraging consumers to consider taking the free credit monitoring option instead. “You can still choose the cash option on the claim form,” the agency writes in an FAQ on the settlement, “but you will be disappointed with the amount you receive and you won’t get the free credit monitoring.”

If I remember the math, it was something like less than a quarter million people could ask for the money to get $125. And if everyone affected asked for it, it dropped to like $0.30 or something dumb.

Credit monitoring for a single year = worthless. 80% of the info stolen isn't even going to be sold up on the market for another few years, they don't immediately sell this data out for this reason.
