I cant see battlestar galactica being as good as the reboot a decade ago though, we will see, Id love to be surprised (and to pirate it cause Im not buying another service)

The reboot is one of my favorite shows of all time. I agree though. I don't think it will be as good as the original.

Wouldn't a sequel to the series just be like... modern day Earth?

Producers have underlined that this won't be a remake (with solid cast, not so dated visuals of 2006 version there would be no point anyways) but a different scenario taking place in the same universe.

Could be a prequel, sequel...anything really (though I don't think it'll be a spinoff). Show was one of my favorites so I am open to anything.
