Wasn't work on SARS 1.0 canned since it more or less died off before becoming a major problem? Meaning it wasn't really worth the effort to keep working on it
And by the same token the bits of work that had already been done were what helped all these companies getting a COVID-19 vaccine out the door earlier?

Clearly there is money to be made on not curing things but there is money to be lost on not curing things that kill hundreds of thousands unless of course if you cure it right away and wait a little while for peak demand.
