Elitist institutions are the gatekeeping safeguard against the ignorance of the common man and are the reason democracy has worked. Erosion of faith in those institutions -- journalists, the legitimacy of governance and elections, the mainstream party leadership -- is why things are going to hell.

Honestly I agree with the above - the next generation will never get it until enough people evolve to support global tribalism where this shit isn't so divisive.

People are self-interested and that will never change. The tactic isn't to make more people empathetic, it's to convince people that a society that cares for all levels is better for them. Those people who never have to worry about Biden's tax plans but are like "I might make over 300k/yr someday and I don't want to be taxed out the ass when I do"? You can't convince them that taxing the rich is a better way to administer to society. You have to convince them that taxing the rich benefits THEM and screws over people who are their enemies.

Trump's appeal is "owning the libs" -- Trump's base loves him because Trump feeds their pathological need to punish people they perceive as in a zero-sum competition for success. That's literally what Trump means when he tells them "You won't have a country anymore if you don't go fight to keep me in power."
