what i've always found bizarre about gred's self proclaimed ffxi elitism is that most of us already beat the game before he was level 1. he didn't even experience leveling when the gap was at it's highest

I started playing in 2003. I didn't get to level 75 until 2006.

But leveling was not hard, I just fucked around and wasn't serious about it until like 2005.

I'm not being elitist about how XI was great because it was hard to level. I shared this particular encounter with the lowest common denominator because I couldn't believe I found someone whose inability to hit 75 was literally the inability to farm spells and equipment rather than the lack of time to LFP and grind crabs.

Leveling wasn't hard, it was just a chore. This guy legitimately is here trying to argue that it's hard.

This is the type of person that shouldn't even be in a Dynamis shout group.

Sky was literally on lock down by gil sellers when I got 75 on Asura (thanks dblock). Had to create my own shell to get myself through Sky equipment.

Ya'll were camping Faf vs. each other for three hours, I was camping Ullikummi for twelve hours vs. China.

I think that's why I was keen on graduating to the big leagues of camping whereas everyone else just hated camping.

XI ending like it did left a hole that will never be filled. Like yeah the likelihood is that even had Abyssea never happened I'd still not have Fafnir camping in my life today. The game would have shut down sometime close to 2015 probably due to inability to survive in modern gaming culture where there are too many alternate casual options (including XIV) for XI to retain sufficient population numbers in captive audience who couldn't leave

But the game shutting down permanently in a 75 capped hard horizontal progression system where Kings gear was still BIS would have provided closure. Abyssea robbed me of closure. It actively made previous time and effort irrelevant, and I will always be embittered because of it.

Quite literally, I think of what Mizuki Ito did to FFXI like being a parent and having a teacher murder your child and then the jury renders an acquittal because that teacher got the jury's kids into college. I have been out of FFXI for longer than I played it, and Abyssea is still the central point of trauma in my life.
