Just my two cents, but when there are 27 different variants using the location the variant originated as shorthand as opposed to a numerical designation is probably easier for most people to grasp. When trying to make a distinction between the variants the point of origin is a logical factor to reference. Calling it "the china virus" when there was no other major pandemic happening was not needed as a distinction. It's like when someone complains about someone else and feels the need to include "they were black" when that has no bearing on the matter, it may be factually correct, but adding race (or geographical) details unnecessarily racially charges the statement. For example, my mom used to bitch about waiting at the grocery store for people with food stamps checking out, but every time she felt the need to tell me they were black it just sounded racist af.

edit: this is also obviously ignoring the fact that the words of someone in a position of power with such a large audience bear more weight than saying "china virus" in casual conversation, and that Trump specifically had a history of already being antagonistic towards China.
