I have to laugh that most of the players the Kings protected in the Vegas expansion are on other teams. And they went with 8 skaters - 1 goalie protection

Forced NTC/NMC: Brown, Kopitar, Doughty, Quick
Carter - PIT
Picked:
Martinez - VGK
Pearson - VAN
Muzzin - TOR
Tofolli - MTL

VGK drafted McNabb so they p much got a full 2nd D pairing from LA lol.

Vegas is also exempt from this expansion draft for Seattle, so if you're worried they're going to lose a player, fear not.

That's the biggest load of bullshit. Not that we had anyone worth taking, but I'm pretty sure in the Ottawa/Tampa expansion the Sharks still had to make people available.

Apparently because they arent apart of the draft, they dont get any of the expansion fee that the other teams get.

tl;dr Teams can protect 8 or 10 skaters (depending on their own choice/team make-up) certain players have to be protected (no movement clauses in contracts) certain players cant be picked (Entry-level contracts, not enough NHL experience, long-term injuries etc) Seattle gets to choose 1 player from each team except Vegas..Seattle has to work within the salary cap/floor and has to have a certain number of players under contract through 2022...teams can make trades with seattle that say basically, "we'll give you X and Y to not pick Z from our team" which is how Vegas got so good so fast

Gonna guess a combination of teams having learned that giving Seattle assets to take a specific player is dumb as fuck, and also Seattle barely having any assets of their own to actually trade with save for their draft picks and that one college kid they signed
