You're talking ACL (which is an almost guaranteed surgery these days) vs an Achilles, which is still an absolute crapshoot.

But yes any team in the NBA would gladly pay for Kawhi to rehab a year knowing you're getting 3 (theoretically) healthy years after.

    But seriously

If the max is worth it for 3 years worth of production from a 4 year contract (and I'm not saying that's wrong whatsoever) then the max is probably too low tbh

(and what I meant above was "does he sign a max contract" moreso than does he get offered one)

If the max didn't exist and players were getting paid what they're actually "worth" (in terms of Real Plus/Minus or other fun advanced metrics, or in terms of just simple monetary value advertising/merch wise), guys like 2nd Cavs era-Bron would take up an entire teams salary cap.

Yeah winning teams have always been the ones that were able to extract surplus value out of max value contracts or break the salary cap in weird ways (see Warriors being able to sign KD then max out Curry)

AG what's the most you want to pay for CP3 to return?

    Is 3/100 too much?

ye max contract limitations crushes what ought be proper recompense for players like Bron and Steph who are giving you far more on court value than they are paid for. puts you in a position where, for example, Booker and Giannis are both maxed out on 1st round pick contracts, earning within a couple mill of each other this year, but Giannis is giving far more bang for the buck.

it's not perfect but add win shares + VORP and divide by million made and you see gaping tiers open up among the maxed out NBA elite. it hardly need be said but a Jokic max is so so much more valuable than a Klay Thompson max. to say nothing of comparing a Kevin Durant max to a Russell Westbrook max.

we're in an extremely difficult position going forward tbh with Bridges and Ayton set to gobble up extremely expensive extensions in 2022, Ayton a near-certain max. Cam Payne was brilliant for us but has prolly priced himself out of a resigning with his play, leaving us with a point guard deficit even if Paul comes back and is the same player.

ultimately, we were two wins away from a chip so ownership will obviously run it back. but we got very lucky with injury breaks, and very lucky with Paul's health all things considered. i strongly doubt he can keep up this play at 38-39 and the contract will be an albatross by then, it will be one the second the inevitable aging injury-decline occurs, but the team is so young that in 3 years everyone will be entering or still in their primes. just gotta hope one of the young guys (Ayton, Bridges, or Cam) pops while Paul is still balling to grab a chip, or we can get a new point by then to keep the core running.

Does CP free up enough space for you to go after a young gunner?

it depends on how the Paul deal is structured but basically we're mostly fucked re cap space and relying on the MLE, which will prolly go towards another big. if we grab Payne with Bird Rights we're hovering around the luxury tax, even pre-Ayton / Bridges extensions.

Lonzo to Bulls = p sick backcourt with LaVine turning into one of the league's better scorers.

ye Lowry's only a year younger but has 160 fewer games played and a better injury history. we'll see tho only takes one bad one at that age and a career is over.

    For AG

Good shit for the Suns. Maybe not so much for Payne and what he potentially could've gotten.
