omg.
Shiffrin DNF in the slalom portion of the combined. She came into that in 5th from the downhill and the only people in front were speed skiers, so this was a huge chance to win.
Beaten. I am genuinely shocked. I guess her head just wasn't in it this time. Several other skiers fell right after her though so maybe it was the conditions. It was snowing pretty good. No clue.
Also, team Canada wins the Gold medal game over the US in women's hockey.

Team USA was down a very good player throughout the whole of the Olympics too though, and only lost by 1 goal in the final match.
If you thought the doping scandal couldn't make Russia look any worse..
It gets worse..
You HAVE to watch the rebroadcast of the women's figuer skating final tonight!! I don't even know if they will show it all it was that ugly.
One of the most terrible things I have ever seen happen at the Olympics.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT WILL SHOCK YOU!
Probably because she was told by the Russian government to take a dive and get rid of the doping controversy; Once they realized they were gonna medal with another Russian skater anyways.
She purposely sucks, her family stays safe, and the medal ceremony is held with Russia still taking gold regardless.
They get to have their cake and eat it too.
During the earlier runs, they were bringing up how she could basically mess up a lot and still podium. Then add in that the Japanese skater had a fall. When I was watching this morning, I just was going by their comments, assuming it was a foregone conclusion and it didn't even register how many mistakes were made. I wasn't going to believe it until the score was on the screen.
Having just watched it, I'm more inclined to believe it's because she's a fifteen year-old who wasn't in the right headspace with everything that has surrounded her the past week or so.
The adults around her (parents, coaches, officials, whomever), put her in a shitty situation, and she couldn't perform with all that pressure on her.
It wasn't because she fell, or didn't medal. It's what happened AFTER that was what was so bad. I guess they didn't show this on prime time last night? It was a complete shit show.

So some parts of the conversation were covered during the primetime coverage, but the commentators definitely were not presenting it like that. They definitely mentioned Trusova saying she did not want to go out there, but I believe it was presented as her being upset about everything that happened around Valieva, not that she was mad at skating.
Can't speak to if it was them misunderstanding what was being said/going on, or intentionally misleading the conversation because it looks bad for the Olympics.
Man, I don't know if Shiffrin should have been on the faster course for this team event, but I'm sure people on twitter who have never been on skis or seen any training runs will have plenty of takes on that. USA made it to the bronze race, but lost to Norway in that on the tiebreaker (total of fastest male+female times).
