China has warned countries who have announced a diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympics that they "will pay the price for their mistaken acts".

"The United States, Britain and Australia have used the Olympics platform for political manipulation," Wang Wenbin, a spokesperson at the Chinese foreign ministry, said.

Chinese state media claimed on Wednesday that Beijing "never planned to invite US and Western politicians who hype the 'boycott' topic".

The move by these countries stops short of preventing athletes from attending - something which has been welcomed by International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach.

"The presence of government officials is a political decision for each government so the principle of IOC neutrality applies," he said.

China has officially invited Vladimir Putin to the games and he has accepted.

I honestly didn't expect that. I should have figured though. Typical communist response to worldwide outcry over human rights. Misdirection and denial.

The "cauldron" was bad. They just put the relay torch in the fixture and called it a day. What if Ali just put the torch in the holder and they said "k, we done here?" I assumed that it was going to be raised so that it would light a wick for an actual cauldron or that the whole thing would be lit or something.

More than that, the music was strange. Past decade of Olympics, well... London had British rock, Sochi had Russian music, Rio had the Carnival feel, Pyeongchang had KPop, Tokyo had video game music. Here they roll with Tchaikovsky, Bizet, Vivaldi, among others. Nothing wrong with that if it's some basic music appreciation syllabus, but it's super generic and underwhelming.

...and then they did "Imagine" AGAIN. I hope whoever directs the Paris opening doesn't continue making this a thing.

I mean if you think about China, it's pretty appropriate they copy other people's accomplishments instead of coming up with something original.
