Bird was washed by the time I was 7 years old (at the age of 32...) and he looks stiff compared to modern 6'9 players in his highlights. He was definitely a max effort guy, you can't teach that grit.

Yeah I'm aware his chronic back problems led to bone spurs on both Achilles that required surgery

But if I was going to argue he'd be a great defender in the modern NBA I wouldn't talk about that

I think it'd be a wash so he'd still be a very effective defender.

The defensive changes since 2002 have largely affected the players at either extreme of size/mobility (small guards getting picked on in the paint or slow centers trying to defend guards on the perimeter)

Meanwhile, Lakers are straight up not having a good time to open the season. Gonna be 0-2 and they don't look good.
