Shoulda been Wheeler. Pitched almost 30% more innings than Burnes with only a 12% worse ERA.

Burnes: 2.43 ERA 167 IP

It was neck and neck. I think Wheeler should have gotten it, but Burnes any other year would have been a hands down winner, assuming DeGrom's arm doesn't fall off.

It's hard to argue any of the top three, but I just think the "Ws shouldn't matter" parade has swung things too far the other way in favour of expected stats. Reward what happened, not what was forecasted. IP and ERA should be weighted far heavier than anything else.

Burnes set the all time MLB record with batters faced without a walk, tied the MLB all time record for consecutive batters struck out, and threw (8 innings of) a no-hitter

oh and he had the best ERA this season too

if Wheeler wanted to be the Cy Young this season maybe he should've used some of those extra innings to break some records

Burnes was 1st in baseball in K/9, Wheeler was 12th. Wheeler was 2nd in HR/9 - very impressive at 0.68 - Burnes was first by a mile at 0.38. While Burnes had the lowest ERA in baseball, he also obliterated everyone in xERA, FIP and xFIP - stats more predictive of true ability.

Wheeler had a very normal great season. Burnes had a world-historically great season by some metrics. His FIP was second only to Pedro Martinez's 1999 for the lowest in post-integration baseball history.
