Alabama men's basketball player Darius Miles and another man have been charged with capital murder in connection with an early-morning shooting near campus that killed a 23-year-old woman.
Tuscaloosa Police Capt. Jack Kennedy said that the shooting occurred early Sunday morning in the Strip off University Blvd. near campus. He said Jamea Harris of the Birmingham area was shot and killed.
Miles, 21, a junior reserve forward from Washington, D.C., and Michael Lynn Davis, 20, of Charles County, Maryland, were both charged with capital murder. The capital murder charge arose because the death involved shots fired into a vehicle, Kennedy said.
"At this time, it appears that the only motive was a minor altercation that these individuals had with the victim as they were out on The Strip,'' Kennedy said in a news conference Sunday evening.
He said the driver of another vehicle, in which Harris was a passenger, approached campus police near Bryant-Denny Stadium at about 1:45 a.m. saying that someone had shot into the vehicle, and he fired back. One of the suspects was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at a local hospital, and Kennedy declined to disclose who fired the gun or who was hurt.
Neither the driver of the other vehicle nor Harris nor Davis appeared to be affiliated with the university, Kennedy said.
On Saturday, Alabama had announced before its game against LSU that Miles would miss the rest of the season with an ankle injury. His bio has been removed from the athletic department website, and in a statement Sunday, the university said that he "has been removed from campus'' and is no longer on the team.
Not every day you see an Izzo team outrebounded but still win by 10+.

New Mexico State has canceled the remainder of its men's basketball season after reviewing a police report that cited three players for false imprisonment, harassment and counts of criminal sexual contact against a teammate.
The campus police report, obtained by multiple outlets, including ESPN, redacted the names of the players involved. The report detailed the victim telling investigators that on Feb. 6, three members of the team held the victim down, "removed his clothing exposing his buttocks and began to 'slap his [buttocks].' He also went on to state that they also touched his scrotum.
The victim told police he had no choice but to let this happen "because it's a 3-on-1 type of situation.'' The victim said other incidents had been occurring since last July or August, and that inappropriate physical and sexual touching by his teammates had been occurring in the locker room and on road trips.
The report said that on Friday, the victim went to campus police to report a possible assault but did not want to press criminal charges for the time being.
Huge win for Sparty at home against Indiana. UGA has likely played themselves out of tournament chances aside from winning the SEC tournament with two blowout losses to Bama and Arkansas.
Like, the Bama loss after they got nipped by Tennessee was expected. But getting BTFO twice is just not getting it done.

After 47 seasons, Hall of Famer Jim Boeheim will not be returning as the men's basketball coach at Syracuse, it was announced Wednesday.
Just hours after the Orange lost 77-74 to Wake Forest on a buzzer-beating 3-pointer at the ACC tournament, Syracuse announced that associate head coach Adrian Autry, who has been on the staff since 2011, would be promoted to replace the 78-year-old Boeheim.
Well that’s what I get for putting faith in any team out of Virginia.
Holy shit, what a fucking sequence. Round 1 Virginia is best Virginia.
