Weird PC issue after playing Halo

I've run into a weird bug and I can't figure out the cause outside of it maybe being Halo fucking with my monitor.

If I do an extended session, and when done and exit to desktop, everything looks good. If I go and launch Persona 4 Gold, it goes to a black screen with audio.

If I reboot, the bios splash screen looks scrambled, then everything looks fine once at the windows login screen.

The only fix I've found is to unplug the power to the monitor, wait a few seconds, and everything works perfectly.

I'm running the latest game ready drivers from Nvidia. Specs are a Ryzen 5900, EVGA 3080TI, 32gb of corsair vengeance ram. Monitor is an LG ultra gear 1440 monitor at 165hz.

About the only thing I haven't tried is capping the FPS in halo.

Any idea what may be going on?

Check your drivers first off, Nvidia has already released 2 hotfixes for the drivers from like a week ago.

Damn, that may be it then. I'll snag that when I get home.

That may of fixed it. Did an hour of Halo, then immediately fired up persona 4 and no black screen with audio

The most recent hotfix had a specific note about 1440p/165hz displays on laptops with Optimus with the exact scenario you described. Possible that for whatever reason it was also affecting you.

Ok, I lied. Just had to power cycle the monitor again to run Persona after some Halo the. Watching South Park.

So bumping this again as it doesn't seem to be Halo specific. Issue still keeps cropping up where after doing some gaming, the monitor outright will not power off to go to sleep, and if I reboot, the bios screen is all scrambled like an out of tune TV. Power cycling fixes it, but would rather resolve the root issue.

I just disabled G-Sync on the monitor to see if that resolves it. I have the most current Nvidia drivers, updated drivers/firmware for the monitor, everything else hardware wise is up to date. If that doesn't work, what are the odds that it's the monitor versus graphics card as I haven't had any of these issues in game?

Hard to say if you don't have another monitor to test with. The monitor itself failing/overheating at high refresh rates may be possible, but the GPU failing is also possible. Driver issue isn't as likely on a fresh install since a problem as big as this, even if it's rare, would have some fanfare behind it online.

Yeah, unfortunately my only other monitor besides my TV, which I can't do FPS games on due to my current layout is a 1080p 60hz monitor, and never had that issue on my previous computer.

so doing some more googling, changing words around I found this, then similar issues (black screen on bios, then normal upon reaching windows) and had this fix listed, so may try this
