To be fair, that joke actually works. When I was in Germany last Autumn, random people (sharing a dinner table, bar, etc) would feel the compulsion to bring it up. "Tso, Vhat ist da deal mit Trump anywhey?".
So, the reason that joke of yours works right there is for the same reason of the exact line I would give them: Trump is a symptom of the disease, and not the disease itself.

Similar to the impeachment trial, Americans really don't give a shit about the substance behind that just like they don't care about the substance behind this. Sides were already drawn and now it's a sporting match of misguided frustration. So they can subpoena him all they want. It doesn't matter.
