Some former, mostly latter. I greatly appreciate patients telling me what they believe is going on with them. That's one of my first questions. I have very smart patients that save me time and them money through very thorough self diagnosing. "These are the symptoms, my mom and brother had similar symptoms and now these same symptoms are starting to show up." They tell me what meds work and don't work for their family. I'll usually try a med they reported works if everything seems to fit and the med is appropriate. And it'll usually work. This, however, is pretty rare.

What I don't like are patients rolling in, telling me about always being neurodivergent but undiagnosed, then telling me their symptoms like they're reading right out of the DSM. Then when they do not get the med they want on the first appointment, they'll argue that a 30 second video of someone that may or may not be an actual expert knows them better than a verifiable expert spending an hour gathering extensive history through specialized interviewing.

There's a subreddit (that I've read) and I'm sure tiktok vids that detail exactly what to say to a provider to get any number of prescriptions. And they're very accurate. Even details contingencies if the provider decides to start in a different direction.

I rarely prescribe stims or benzos on the first intake. But I have. One I can recall was a telehealth visit. Whole interview, guy was walking around the house. He was showing me stuff he was working on. He probably had 15 simultaneous projects going on. Told me he used to have ADHD but hasn't had it since moving locally a few years ago, but feels like he needs to be back on it. He told me what doctor he saw in what city he lived in. I googled the doc, everything looked legit. If he was bullshitting me, he did such a phenomenal job that I wouldn't even be that mad.

An American company for sure will also be taking all of your information and I'd argue what they could do with the information could more easily or quickly affect you than if a foreign one had it instead. Pick your poison; or, just don't use any of those kinds of apps, like me.

I pretty much agree with this, but, without sounding too much like Gred, tolerating an InfoSec leak of my or others information is better tolerated with the (current iteration of, hopefully long term iteration of) US government having it rather than China or Russia.

American companies only leak your info to ad salespeople and occasionally malicious criminals intent on stealing your identity and money.

Wasn't Gridr forceably sold to a US entity - and then immediately used to out people by selling user data to religious groups?

I don't think just being US owned is any kind of solution on its own, unless some markedly improved data privacy regulations were passed when I wasn't paying attention.

It's definitely a policy being miles behind technology issue. While I don't use TikTok, even if I did, whatever info a foreign entity would glean off me would do what..? Okay, they'd know I'm a nerd, play some mobile games, make some leftist rants here and there, and browse some adult things from time to time. It's a profile that'd essentially match millions of others. Any additional sorts of breaches like reading texts, operating cameras without consent, and other hijackings both have legal recourse and impetus from hardware/software development to prevent it from even being possible. I have no issue with government hardware banning installation of various things, but matters of some failing to separate business from pleasure doesn't really justify attempting to eradicate the app or others like it from existence.

Personal and consumer rights need a lot of work in the digital space. I'd even go so far as to assert with mobile net metering data for a lot of people, forcing ads should actually be illegal since it consumes that resource unsolicited. Just good luck getting our capitalist hellscape to agree to making any sort of ad a consensual thing without inhibiting use of a program if you opt out. Like, no one fucking likes ads on Twitch for numerous reasons, but much like Youtube, it's about breaking adblockers and shoving 1-3 minute stretches down our throats every 20-30m often without the streamer even realizing it. Granted, it Tiktok data farming is at all as effective as Twitch's ad pushing, they absofuckinglutey have no clue what I want or care about.

Probably feel a bit different maybe if you were Chinese and critical of the party line, and had extended family still in China.

It's worth emphasizing once again that the TikTok concern extends beyond mere data collection – a simplified narrative often presented by various sources for its digestibility. The crux of the matter lies in the potential control the Chinese government could exert over your feed. This authority opens the door to subtle manipulation of public opinion on a broad spectrum of issues, gradually molding the collective mindset to align with their narrative. In an era where social media already serves as a playground for those who delight in manipulating people for amusement, the concentrated application of such tactics could prove exceptionally potent and concerning.
