Hollow knight race is exciting. Definitely looking forward to that
Anyone watching SGDQ 2025?
Never seen this A Plumber for All Seasons, the sprite work is beautiful for a fan made Mario game.
Catching a run here and there, not many games piqueing my interest and barely recognize any runners. Early Friday has a bunch of retro and I know Eldra who's doing Rockin' Kats.
I've watched parts of the beat saber showcase on repeat since it aired basically. The Mario, Kirby, and Undertale songs are just so good.
Do they not do awful blocks anymore? Didn't see any games that would really fall under that. Those were always some of my favorite runs from SGDQ.
This Synchronica co-run is pretty fucking amazing lol
They call it the Silly Block during SGDQ.....which is starting now.
The Mario Odyssey run tonight was extremely tight too. Easily one of the highlights of the event thus far.
Mostly wait for the Super Metroid low% Ice run later today, since Oats & Eddie have been butting heads for WR on that the past few months, and they're racing each other.
The AEW Fight Forever run was amazing all-around, definitely recommend watching on Youtube if you missed it.
The Super Metroid run did not disappoint.
Super metroid was great. Oats is an entertainer, man. He was locked in for that run but still had me laughing. Great race
I'm skipping Deltarune since I'm waiting on that to be finished before I dip my toes into it, but by and large, a few small highlight runs aside (eg. Mario Odyssey, SM race, SMB3, Pacman DX), that is easily one of the worst GDQs I've tuned into in the last decade in terms of overall quality with the runs and commentary. It is also by a decent margin the least tuned into GDQ stream to date, despite making all of their donation incentives w/ the heavy lifting of anonymous donations and their sponsors.
I think I've also heard a certain two words chanted enough times this week of tuning in to last me a decade as well. It was extremely obnoxious about it, between character name incentives almost always being that, the hosts saying it, and donation messages seemingly feel cherry picked for it. Doctors Without Borders felt secondary to it, despite being the charity the whole event was for.
Unsure which two words you're referring to, but honestly the only reason I even knew this was on was the BG thread. In past years I've seen it advertised elsewhere but I haven't seen a single clip from it on reddit this entire week.
I can't remember if it was GDQ or another event that had some kind of scandal last year but either way it's a shame the fundraising has become a sideshow to egos and cringe jokes.
That assessment feels kind of excessive; cannot and won't comment on the quality of the runs in terms of skills since the ones I watched definitely were entertaining at the very least and also great displays of skills, both in terms of quality and commentary, but my outlook may also be limited since I'm not really part of the primetime audience, which, I will admit, also applies to the (still ongoing) finale, as I literally passed out during the Deltarune run, being from Europe and all. Would kind of argue that the finish drags on a little too much, but they also raised another 500k in that time, so who cares.
About "those two words" - I mean, if you mean to imply that this could lead to less donations overall, then you may possibly have a point, but it's been my impression that these events have always been meant to have a secondary objective, the secondary one implicitly being the inclusion of all kinds of people. Whether the inclusion of "trans rights" being a focal point of attention is an issue or not is probably a different issue, comparable to rainbow flags etc., but honestly, given the people in charge and the people running the games, this should hardly be a surprise, also in consideration of today's social climate, the recent CSD and, of course, recent political developments, most notably in the US and the UK.
There definitely is a larger discussion to be had about the overall validity of this kind of approach, but if this kind of attention to a certain agenda (and I do not even consider this political - acceptance of all people should honestly not be political) is an issue to some folks, then they are probably the issue.
I think it’s just hard to put on original quality runs anymore that are still entertaining. We’ve seen a lot of our favorite games broken and speed ran countless times now.
Every now and then you stumble on an amazing gem like Pepsiman lmao. But more often than not it’s some Balatro crap that’s as dry as the Sahara.
I still enjoy it though. Something about just having it on while me and the wifey are getting ready to knock out for the night just feels endearing.
IMO part of the problem this year is they picked a niche game with no skips as the Finale run, and didn't even hit the extra boss incentive which is arguably one of the cooler parts of the game.
I have no issue with trans rights (or any other progressive cause they want to associate with the event). What annoys me are the random interjections from the crowd that are just not funny. Also interesting commentary from the couch being cut off every 2 minutes for more incentive shilling. I understand it needs to be done but God it gets tiring to hear.
Shouju's kaizo run was great. I'm working my way through the final fantasy ix run now and the cutscene remover makes the game feel so fast. They finished disk 1 in under an hour
