    Browser Hijacked

well my homepage has been changed to one of those awful search pages, and when I click any of my favorites or type in an address, it just goes to this page... I've tried everything and I don't know how to get rid of it... anyone have some ideas or suggestions or have dealt with this before? I really really really don't want to format again.

    Get hijack this here: http://www.spychecker.com/program/hijackthis.html

Run it in safe mode and get rid of everything it finds. Clears up lots of crappy problems.

Also try running and updated scan of Ad-aware in safe mode to get rid of all your bad cookies etc. Make sure its updated before you run it or the definitions will be outdated.

Also dont use crap IE, use firefox:

    HijackThis

    Adaware

    spybot: search and destroy

    and an online scan at

Yup good stuff, Malign. Also, you might want to try winsockfix which resets your winsock/hosts files which can get spyware infected. I have a copy hosted at

I do this stuff all day at work, too

    /comfort Malign.

We recently started a walk-in help center at work...it's insanely busy (stupid students and their p2p apps) and about 70-90% of all problems are spyware related. It's such a sad succesor to great programs like napster that didn't ream your computer.

Spyware is so agressive these days. I have not formatted my laptop since I recieved it about 2.5 years ago as a gift. Recently I spent $50 buying Norton because spyware has taken over. I also ran Ad-aware and several other programs to remove the spyware to no avail. I even went into safe mode and ran the removal programs with no success.

I have this sneaking suspicion I will need to copy down all the locations of the files and manually delete them through DOS. At this point there are 30-something files that will all need to be hand deleted.

Does anyone know any end-all-be-all methods of getting rid of all this junk besides formatting? Or have any good tips on getting rid of files that can't be deleted when the OS is running?

Did you try running the suggested programs in Safe Mode?

This is not a fix of current problems, but will prevent any time consuming problems in the future.

1: partition your disk into 3 drives (first OS drive 6 giga, second OS backup drive 2 giga and third the rest)
    2: format all drives
3: install windows and all drivers/programs ect to first drive
4: install and update playonline to first drive
5: install and update ffxi to third drive
6: have Norton Ghost make a compressed coppy of first drive to second drive

Now when you get virus or anything boring hapens to your windows, simply run the ghost (takes 5 min total) and all your problems go away, you dont even have to find the problem and you dont have to reupdate anything but playonline viewer.
