As far at the WWII reference..... almost anyone who was "of age" was in the army then.

Benedict is an interim pope. They don't expect him to live long. That's the whole reason he was elected. Sad, but very true.

The problem with electing a younger person to pope, is the fact they do live too long. People then become very attached to the Pope, as everyone saw with John Paul III. It's not a bad thing, but it is a heavy loss when someone of that stature dies after so long in the spotlight.
