Got 1 thing out of a GM at least...

This might seem a tad odd and all, but I got really annoyed when the search and AH broke down just a few mins ago, so I called a GM and at first just reported SE for harassing all players with the System Messages and maintainance hours we've had lately.
Don't get me wrong, I couldn't care less about the .54$ I've lost due to maintainance from the three (I think it's three) 10-hour fixes we've had. It's just that I'm sick of not knowing why it's not being fixed...
Harassment defined by SE: from (Q12170). "Specifically, it refers to actions that are insulting or hurtful to specific individuals or to groups"

    This is the outcome:

(erased a friend, telling me how his LS was doing in riverne)
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...secondpage.jpg

So at least I got to know that they are experiencing new problems now. Great! They've fixed the old problems. Too bad the new ones are just the same... :/

    Just wanted to share...

I work for a large computer company. 90% of upgrades (at least) have lots of issues at the beginning. It doesn't surprise me at all really, but they could still be more proactive in testing.

I can understand them not being able to keep the servers up all the time, but when they do go down, and every single time they do maintenence, why does it have to be in North American time? I have a very limited amount of time I can play, aswell as others I know, and there always seems to be problems/Maint. when it comes to that time.

Because the servers are based in Japan, everyone who works on them is Japanese, the developers are Japanese. And thus, they do maintenance during JP downtime, which is in the middle of the day for NA cause that's when they sleep.

  6. #6

That would be understandable to, but they used to rotate times that they did it. Sometimes in Japanese time, and sometimes in North American.

I've been playing since NA release and I can't ever remember them having a normally scheduled maint start in JP prime.

It's always NA time because no two NA players play the exact same hours. If it goes down during work hours people complain, if it goes down in early evening people complain. When it goes down late at night all the people who don't sleep complain but they are all from NA and for some reason these constitute all of these 24 hours in a day as "NA hours".

I understand this amount of maintenence has been horrendous, but trust me they realize this too and are just as unhappy about it. The first batch was server upgrades which made a lot of sense. This next batch is just a serious problem they have been trying to fix. It's not personal, they don't do it just to piss of NA players because it effects all players.

GM's work for SONY, and in North America. The servers are in Japan, they don't know much and they really can't help you. I think we just gotta tough it out and if it keeps on this bad for a much longer time I'm sure they'll lose business and they won't be pleased so they are probably working as hard as they can.

Doesn't really matter, not alternating the times and keeping the maintenance during NA primetime for all 3 batch loads of extended maint. can be constituted as discrimination and is grounds for a class action lawsuit.

    Yes I'm doing research 8)

Judge: Why do you always do maintenence at 1 PM EST.

SE: There are only 2k people on.

    Judge: Case Dismissed.

At 1 PM EST (a little after JP primetime has ended) is when the fewest amount of people are on. Why the hell would they ever have a maintenence when 4.5k people are on?

1 PM - 8 PM EST is when the fewest amount of people are playing. FACT.

8:00PDT - 18:00 PDT is...11 A.M. EST (low influx) -> 9:00 P.M. EST (much larger influx). 8pm EST seems very unlikely (I'm not saying impossible) to be a low influx of North American (not just US, Canada as well) players. If you figure most schools let out at 3pm, let's say we hack an hour away for miscellanous work, that's 4-9pm if we assume some parents force their kids to go to bed at that time. That's 5 hours, per each player, and if we assume per each day of the traditional work week (M-F) the ongoing period of a month. 5hr x 5 = 25hr/workweek x 4 = 100hr/mo. x 12 = 1200hr/yr. (moot to mention year but w/e). Now just estimate the # of players in the age group at and post 13 years (since after 13 you don't need legal guardian/parent consent (pretty sure that follows for MMOs as it does most of the 'net)), you have a very large culmination of time accrued and could probably put a dollar amount to it as well.

If we exclude the weekends in this entire calculation, we can reasonably assume these variables as a constant, since in most cases the high volume would be on weekends when people don't work/have school. Otherwise you could have to take time out due to people actually having reasons to not play, whatever those may be. Disregarding the weekends into this scenario just makes it easier to consider a base volume.

Evenso, and we rule out the primetime factor, it is still constituting grounds for discrimination. The problem is many people think discrimination only comes in the form of color by skin, or by gender. When in reality there are many different ways to have legitimate, and plausible, discrimination.

Other examples include by religion, sexual orientation, etc., basically your entire "Equal Opportunity Employment" clause. There are subtle versions though. Example, in stores throughout the country ever notice how they have male and female cashiers? They have to. Why? Because if you don't, you can lead onto the impression that said company is only allowing said gender to be a cashier which would constitute as discrimination. Yes it sounds stupid, but this is true.

Here's another one, and this actually applies to me personally (outside of the SE related issue). I've recently taken the Civil Service Exam for NYS to get a state job, in particular the KBS (Keyboard Specialist) 1 exam. Statistically for this job, it is dominated heavily by the female population. When the took the exam I was the only dude in the room. However, this puts me, believe it or not, at a better chance of getting hired. Why? I'm classified as a minority (because women dominate this profession). So, the state would want to hire a male simply because it looks good on their records, AND it keeps them within the entire legality of Equal Opportunity.

It's stupid, and sounds stupid, but it's grotesquely true beyond belief. Back to the main point.

SE has been conducting maint. during times when NA player's time typically begins to grow to a higher peak, and the Japanese time dwindles (I'm assuming basically our day is their night, and vice versa, I don't know the full time conversion). However, on these past three extended maint.'s, all of them were conducted during a time period of NA growth of playtime. Not one was in EU, not one was in JP, but all in NA time.

If you do not vary the times, this can be grounds for discrimination.
