I actually agree with one of the previous posters and always use save-password... Half for convenience, half because of the keyloggers that were running rampant a while back. Then again, this raises a good point... All they'd have to do is create a program that instead of just logging keys, searches into the memory loc that saves passwords, no? Sure, it'd be SOMEWHAT encrypted, but if they have their own version of POL to play around with (which they probably do, seeing as how POL itself is free) it wouldnt take long to figure out the encryption.

A while back, even though I Always use autosave, I realized that every time I logged in auto-save was off and it asked for my password... This was around the time everyone on allakhazam and KI were freaking out, so I was worried. What I did: type a whole bunch of words and general gibberish into notepad, and try to stick your password in there somewhere. Copy your password, paste it into POL. Longer the better, and especially useful if your real password is just gibberish. Even with a keylogger, all they'll get is the gibberish you typed into notepad; though they could still figure it out if they tried every combination of letters, if you do it well enough it would be virtually impossible to try all combinations. Or, use character map and cut-paste every character, and then do autosave - leaves no trace for them to keylog.

hmmm that kinda scares me... i have svhost on my computer.... fuck....

oh well i dont play ffxi anymore, and i found its easy to crt+alt+delete it
but it does a dirty trick on you, it runs the ms-dos shutdown command when you close it so, if you find it have ms-dos open and type: shutdown -a
    if it starts the countdown

Getting ready for the holiday spirit (Christmas in Kuftal), so I decided to post that back in my sig a few months before Christmas. Speaking about Christmas... why does Vana'diel celebrate it? (Santa Hats, Christmas Trees that teleport around Gustaburg, etc)

svhost is supposed to be running... thats why it's dangerous, because you may mistake it for the real one...

That's a decent idea Jotaru, but the best defence against keyloggers is to not have one. Always run virus and anti-spyware scans every day, never surf warez sites with MSIE, and try to keep the porn sites to a minimum.

Key loggers are very simple programs that do very specific functions in pretty much the same way every time, which makes them very easy to detect.

The trojan this topic is about is much more dangerous though. My advice is to use Avast! anti-virus, as it can pick up trojans like this one.

trendmicro also offers free online virus scans (which is pretty decent)
    http://www.antivirus.com

You might also try out spybot search and destroy and Lavasofts Ad-aware for anti-spyware technology

Norton 2005 i believe covers spyware now as well as viruses

i also highly recomend those who need help generating passwords check out this http://www.winguides.com/security/password.php

allows you to randomly generate passwords however long you want it, with both capitals and lower case, numbers and special characters.
it also gives you the password Phonetically which helps with memorization.

    Mozilla Firefox > Microsoft IE

I hate it when you are unable to use punctuation and symbols in passwords. >_<

Ive found that a solid hardware firewall and a really reliable and often (sometimes thrice daily) updated virus scanner have really kept me safe from the evils of the interweb. I noticed I sharply lost a lot of the crap that was sneaking in when I switched to firefox and started shunting my email into google instead of outlook + pop3

My virus scanner has kept me safest though from all who would harm me, I cant say enough about how it has kept all of my computers plus all of my familys computers plus the company I work fors computers and all of our data safe from virus infestation. My boss always blamed his computer problems on me untill I installed F-Secure on his system and he had a few hundred nastys.

I wont make the link public, but if anyone does want my little prescious, drop a PM, it keeps everything I own safe, it can for you as well.

that's one benefit to be playing on PS2.

I have my router's main thingy (i'm no good with computer talk) go through my PS2 just like the Radio Shack dude showed me. According to him it's very very hard for people to hack me now.

It keeps Script Kiddie Billy Next Door out, but not anyone determined to get in, I'm afraid.

yeah, script kiddies are the annoying ones, the real deal hackers arent going to be stopped by anything that costs less than several hundred thousand dollars and comes with its own support team
but thankfully those guys probably dont play FFXI nor care about us "little people"

aight so im sitting at my comp today and BAM, i get this message that

"the account has been logged onto by another terminal" message...

I kinda start freakin because not a soul knows my ID or passwords(at least not from me telling them or seeing my screen). so i tried to think fast, i logged in asap, hopeing to maybe kick off whoever kicked me off if it was some hacker... i logged on.. looked over my characters... and nothing seemed to be missing. I then changed my password. contacted a GM, and he told me the same things posted here: change my password, run antivirus. and that they have no way of knowing who/where the login came from.

At first i thought it might have just generated the wrong message error screen. but with everything being posted on here and me reading this today, its got me kinda freaked about a character i've spend over a year building.

anyone any comments? suggestions? etc.. please let me know.

BTW i have 3 mules and a main(75). my main was lvl 9 whm @ the time so maybe they looked at that character and didnt see anything worth taking... i don't know. im like wtf^10th. im gonna go look over my mules again to see if anything is different.

What about avoiding Wearz and porn sites? Maybe that might help? Or just stop playing FFXI alltogheter to avoid this problem.

To everyone who got there account jacked, tough break. To everone bragging about how many mules they have, or how much they are worth in gil and real cash. My question is why would you want to advertise yourself? (*'c')?

lol reading BG forms is almost as addictive as logging into to FFXI with nothing to do, untill people are online.
