Emo stands for Emotional. I'm sure some of you knew that. The reasoning behind their "emo" mood can vary from a break up, family abuse, or even possibly mental illness. In the recent years, we've noticed a bigger "trend" if you will in the emo fashion. I'm very sure there are many that do it for the looks or to think they're cool while other generally feel they're just failures that should not have been born.
Few people are truely emo due to mental problems or family troubles.
Most are just whiny little bitches that need to get their act together.
This guy understands it. It has definately transformed into what could have been at once a cry for help, but easily has turned into a fasion/fad for people who want an excuse to be different or isolated from normal society.Few people are truely emo due to mental problems or family troubles.

EMO = Emotive Hardcore, not Emotional
Linkin Park = Not EMO at all
You can't be "emo", it's a genre. Those "emo kids" out there are nothing but trend whores, simple as that.

Yeah...When I ask a goth why he is a goth, he tells me "individuality". How the fuck is that individuality when you're placing yourself in a group of similar people? :/
This just in! Over time, the emo disease can have permanent effects such as suicide: http://myspacide.ytmnd.com/
Was it wrong that I didn't find that sad in any way?

Can't. Stand. Emo kids.
lol Hellboy...
"you BROKE my TRIDENT"
lol, you guys generalize way too much.
And yeah, linkin park is far from "emo" it's just angsty. If you want to hear some emo listen to Brighteyes or something. And emo music has changed alot over the years, listen to The Smiths, Morrissey, Depeche Mode, that kind of stuff. That's like the "old-school" of emo, but imho it's pretty decent stuff (I'm a pretty big fan of The Smiths). Now, for the most part, it's just little attention whores conforming to the crowd.
However there are "true" emos that have legitament, clinical problems. It could range from something like clinical Manic Depression to Post-traumatic Stress Disorder.
And Orfeo, to answer your questions, the "emo" trend isn't a disease. If anything it's just the after-effects of the last generation. I mean, do you see all these kids with ADD, ADHD, and shit, the whole "depression" thing probably came along with it (My friend's theory blames it on the last generation doing drugs during pregnancy and such. I don't know much about the situation, but on a shallow level it sounds pretty reasonable).
Haha thanks Kytele...nice nice.
"Don't hate me cuz I'm emo... but even if you did hate me, I wouldn't care. I'd just write an accoustic song about it."
What Razz said is absolutely correct. They claim to be original, when the majority of "emo kids" look and dress exactly alike.
Flash, if you want to know more about emo, you should check out some bands...
Old School: Rites of Spring(awesome band, but several members broke off to form Fugazi), Moss Icon, Indian Summer and so forth...
The New Wave: Taking Back Sunday(Yes, I'll admit that I listen to them...Tell All Your Friends was a great album, but unfortunately, John Nolan left), Hawthorne Heights, Saosin(Listen to their song Seven Years and Bury Your Head -acoustic-), etc.
Many of the new wave bands aren't true EMO, but they do draw alot of their inspirations from the first generation. Many of these bands generally have dual guitars and dual vocals(sing-scream).
