What i used to do is a while back was just copy my ffxi folder in 2 halfs onto 2 DVD disks, then after you reformat, install the game and just copy over the files from the DVDs into the folder, you'll get the update message once where it will checks the files but will just skip to update completed. Takes about 30mins to do rather than 2-3 hours of updates.

Not sure if it works now, since I haven't backed up in about 6 months, but if you copy the folder, then zip it, it should fit onto 1 DVD.

    1. Make a backup of your PlayOnline directory
    2. Go to the registry and save a copy of your localmachine->software->playonline(not sure need to check) keys.
    3. Reformat/Install windows
    4. Reinstall FFXI and expansions
    5. Copy over your backup copy and install the saved reg keys
    6. Enjoy

you dont need to save the reg keys, just reset your graphical settings unless they are super custom

it will be pissed and say your HD is damaged, just tell it to stfu and force it to scan

what u mean by reset graphical setting?

anyway, the main thing is back up the POL folder, reinstall the game, copy the POL folder back to the drive. I can skip all the updates?

edit: POL folder or FFXI Folder? ><

If you don't want to bother with backing up your registry and entire POL folder, just make a backup of your ROM folders. When you reinstall your game, overwrite the ROM files with the ones you saved. You'll still have to update, but it won't take nearly as long.

Just FYI, I recently got a new comp and reinstalled FFXI without saving anything because I had no blank DVDs handy. The update from start to finish was only 45 minutes, not that bad. You might save more time from just not bothering to backup anything.

It's probably too late now, but you can use a full system data backup program after installing all that you need and everything is running fine. Then make a backup once a month or so, and you can just restore a backup state next time.
