"Microsoft Admits Windows Genuine Advantage Phones Home
    Posted Jun 12, 2006 at 04:20P

I am very paranoid when it comes to my online privacy. So naturally it has been quite startling to me to notice that whenever I boot my PC my browser automatically connects to some 207.xxx.xxx.xxx IP address every time.

I have a Mcafee firewall with a GUI whois and traceroute function that I used to find information about the owner of the IP address that I find every time I boot up. Needless to say the IP address belongs to a range of class C IP addresses owned by Microsoft, located in Redmond Washington.

Recently Microsoft admitted that the Windows Genuine Validation software they distributed via Windows update, to ensure that no one is using pirated versions of their software, was secretly endowed with the ability to clandestinely "phone home" giving Microsoft unprecedented access to consumer machines.

When they finally 'fessed up recently and admitted that they have been using their WGA software to make XP users computers "phone home" to Microsoft, I was relieved on one hand, but disgusted on the other. What we knew about this annoying WGA update before Microsoft's recent confession was bad enough to cause many to refuse to install the download all together.

I refused WGA until Microsoft instituted a policy that basically denied security updates (via Microsoft's windows update site) to users that refuse to install WGA. When I finally gave in I almost immediately noticed the change that occurred at every boot.

Of course Microsoft claims that there is no sensitive or private information being transmitted when the application phones home and it is doing so simply to preserve the security and stability of the application. Unfortunately, the fact that they neglected to disclose the full functionality of WGA when it was released leads many people (including myself) to believe that Microsoft is not acting in good faith in this matter.

While there are no plans to eliminate the phone home aspect of the application, Microsoft has indicated a willingness to reduce the number of times the software uses your bandwidth to contact them. How nice of them! At least (as yet) they haven't tried to install spy cameras in our homes or chips in our brains, but I'm sure they'll get around to that eventually."

This is a problem... We all know why... I thought there was some kind of privacy agreement when you use windows... Well I guess thats thrown out the window... Fuck what if I write music and it gets passed off as pirated music... What do I do then... It worries me so much! Fucking microsoft bullshit! Opinions please... Post updates on this... It would be awesome if I was wrong and it didn't send shit about other than Microsoft stuff... !

    DMX!

What is this privacy that you speak of?

The NSA is monitoring our phone calls.

The FBI is monitoring our internet usage.

Microsoft is probably telling the government what pirated software you have on your computer.

Didn't this guy campaign on the premise of smaller government?

that is why you don't register with microsoft and use a pirated version.

I know this saying gets old but "fuck microsoft". Gates got rich by copying an IBM software and just renamed it MS-DOS.

UNIX was there too but only used for file storing purposes.

Windows costs about 300$ to buy, while Linux is free, will always remain free and if it wasn't for compalibility issues, Linux would win the O/S war.

Yet Linux is way better for admin purposes and is way safer than microsoft's products.

That being said, I don't think Microsoft has a lot of time left on the top.

Mac has more of a chance taking over Microsoft than Linux.

yeah, Linux is real hot when you have to configure some obscure .conf file in the X-FuckoffanDie module when you want to get 3D acceleration working.

So yeah, what about that Direct X 10.. and the apps that will run on it. I don't see any other OS than one made by MS running all those games. Mac OS runs some games, but nothing close to all the ones that run on Windows. Gamers will still run their shit on Windows for the latest and greatest in 3D accelerated graphics. I hate MS as much as the next guy, but even I can see that shit lol.

Im no avid Linux user, but I have used it. Linux compaired to Windows is like.. Microwaving vs Cooking. Most people just wanna sit down and let the OS do all the work for them, they dont wanna do all the stuff thats involved with Linux. If a person has time to deal with all of the stuff, it may come out better in the end.

But as people said, game support, hardware, software, hell almost everything is Windows friendly. Its a bitch to get things to work on Linux and Mac, if at all.

Most owners rather sit back and enjoy when using a computer, then to mess with every option in exsistance.

With Mac, well, I dont see why people like Mac.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

QFT, not everyone is a wiz-kid at computers, especially those of the older generation. Linux is definitely great for those that know what they're doing, but it's not really user-friendly (including Lindows) for those who aren't computer-saavy or just aren't interested in doing all that stuff.

To the OP, I can't imagine you seriously think they'll go on your comp see songs you composed and take you to court for pirated songs. More often or not people get sued for d/l mainstream songs from musicans that are strongly against their songs being pirated (ya ya all are like that but not all press charges), they're not going to sue you over songs they've never even heard of.

Sounds more like you do download songs and are afraid, and that's good. If you do it do it, but don't whine when people find a way to catch you in the act.

That's because Macs will be running Windows on 'em lol.

And you are right about Linux, it sucks when you know nothing about it, but once you get the hang of it, it rocks! You can do a lot on neat stuff with Linux, too many to name. Talking about Linux, I wonder how it's gonna act on the PS3...

Linux won't take over home PCs, but they will take over servers and big companies that need tight security.

Linux doesn't freeze, very hard to hack Linux, it's a very very solid O/S, and it's European.

Taking Linux III next semester, should be fun hehe
