    Internet Connection Help(Verizon DSL)

I'm having a huge problem. I can't connect to the internet with any games or torrent programs. This includes world of warcraft, counterstrike.. and all my torrents are coming back as timed out and never connect.

I'm not a novice computer user, so this is super frustrating for me. I called verizon tech support and I got someone that could barely speak english, I could barely understand her and she did not understand my problem. Try explaining "yes I can connect to the internet, but I can't connect to any games or downloads, but yes it is indeed an issue with your piece of shit dsl router you sent me," especially to someone who doesn't want to help you to begin with and is just trying to get you off the damn phone so they can go back to tetris and coffee.

    Anyways, rant aside.

Here's the problem, I can connect to the ineternet and browse the web, but not with pretty much any other applications, email and aol instant messenger are all fine. It's quite odd.

    I have a westell versalink 327w. It's a POS. I also have a linksys router.

I tried using the westell versalink and basically, it saved the pppoe settings right in the modem, and the connection is always active.

I also have a verizon icon on my desktop, it also has the pppoe information.

If I do not connect with the verizon icon on my desktop, I can browse the web, but nothing else.

If i do connect with the verizon icon, I can't do anything, it's like I have no internet connection at all. It's like the router and my computer are fighting over who gets to talk to verizon.

What I've done right now, is I set up the POS Westell router as a bridge. I've made it 192.168.1.2.

My linksys router is now responsible for pppoe information and has it saved in the router, it is 192.168.1.1.

The dsl cable goes in through the westell, out of an ethernet port and into the wan connection on the linksys.

Computers are connected to the linksys.

My problem is that I have the same problem I had with the old configuration. Connecting to verizon using the icon on my desktop effectively kills my internet, but without it I can only browse the internet.

I'm really at a loss. I don't know what else I can do.

If you need more info just post here. I'm going to try a few more things. I'll be checking periodically. Thanks for the help in advance.

did you unplug the modem from the rotuer and connect it straight to the computer?

I had similar weird-ass problems with my Verizon DSL modem and using a router. Every time I had to run the Windows Network Setup wizard on a new PC or whatever, I'd end up spending multiple hours basically just doing the same thing over and over again until it worked.

But I'd suggest doing what Zigma said and connect the modem directly to the computer and see if it works normally. After that, I can't say really. At first it sounded like a simple firewall type problem, but now I'm doubtful.

Also, my Verizon DSL came with an installation CD I had to use in order to get the modem working right, did you install yours (if you were given one)?

    Yeah. About 8 billion times.

I've tried all the standard lame tech support requests, plugging directly to the modem, power cycling, and doing a naked hand stand while simultaneously jerking off onto the router.

Yes I did install that verizon software. Going on my third time now.

    I just don't get it.

What it feels like is that this shitty westell dsl modem/router has limited my outgoing and incoming to port 80, and won't accept any information from any other port. Because everything on port 80 works fine, web browser, instant messenging. Anything outside of port 80 doesn't work at all.

Well, I just ran the install cd for the verizon software(before I was just installing the software online) but I dug out the cd.

Now. I get all the way through the installation software, at the end is the account setup section.

I get this error: "Can not connect to the account server, please click retry."

When I click retry, I get the IE page that looks like a 404 error.

At the bottom it said "can't find page or dns error"

So now I've got something to call the stage 1 "tech" about, something maybe they can understand. Maybe I can get lucky and get a stage 2 tech.

One time I called and was lucky enough to get a stage 3 tech, I thought I won teh internets. I only got a stage 3 tech though because apparently stage 1 and 2 are not properly equipped to deal with static networking.

westell dsl modems are also routers. you have to get into the modem config and set up a DMZ to your computer if you're having random problems like this. It might or might not fix it, but i'm betting that that's the source.

A bit OT, but does anyone else on Verizon have one time a day where the connection goes to shit? I bounce between R0 and not R0ing every 30s or so for about 5minutes each day, and it stops. A couple other Verizon users I know of ingame have the same problem. It also occurs in Guild Wars...

ElSugahpie, thanks for your input. This might be the problem. Can you tell me where I should go to setup the DMZ, my linksys router has this option, but it is not overly apparent where the option is on the westell.

    It's the westell 327w.

After 4 hours on the phone with a competent english speaking verizon manager, I'm in no better position than I was before.

But at least I still got porn.

Are you running your internet line through a surge protector? Somtimes that can be a little screwy with your internet connections.

Nope, phone cord runs from wall jack to modem, ethernet cord runs from modem to computer, nothing in the middle.

    Good thought though.

I just bought a new hard drive, so I think I'm going to dump everything I want to save onto it, and just do a reinstall of windows xp.

The verizon manager I spoke with was pretty thorough going through the modem, so I think it may be an issue with my operating system.

At any rate, I've got a new modem coming for tuesday, if my fresh install of xp doesn't do it, hopefully the new modem will get me up and running again.

edit: zigma, I may do that tomorrow if I get no results from a clean install of xp. But I believe all the computers in the house are having the same problem. (that's something I haven't tested yet, but I will tomorrow before ripping computers apart piece by piece.)

Thanks for the help everyone. I'll let ya know how it turns out tomorrow.

edit 2: oh yeah, forgot to mention, while I was on the phone, they had 3 guys there working on my problem, all wow players. Thought that was pretty cool, if you're reading this thread verizon tech guys, sup. And please fix my lolinternet.
