The question I pose to you today is a simple one. What, if anything makes a HNM shell successful, and why?

I would say the most important thing is having leaders that don't have to ask retarded questions like "What makes a linkshell good?"
After that I'd say success.
Leaders who don't secretely embezzle money from LS Bank then drop the linkshell during a LS meeting when confronted about it, effectively ending the shell.
Members who don't act like the linkshell owes them something.

Depends on your definition of successful I guess. I'd say the most important thing has to be the makeup of your linkshell. It becomes increasingly obvious as to why HNM Linkshells survive when you see they same people helping each other day in and day out. This really requires everyone to be on the same page. I'm sure you've seen linkshells before where people will lose interest as soon as they get their godly items. Often times it's not until a linkshell starts to get a few of these that you can assess the possibilities of it becoming a solid linkshell. That being said I find that these players are very hard to find that are willing to sacrifice for everyone else involved and not just until they can make their benefit.
Probably second most important are the rules/system you follow. You could have a group of the best players on the server, but w/o a good system it will crumble assuredly. I put this second though because hopefully over time a linkshell in this situation will evolve their rules/system to cater more to the desires of everyone.

Have people that will cooperate with the other people in the shell. Don't invite people if their just going to come to events and such and leave durring them to lvl another job

Get good bots, keep them up-to-date, and only let PC players join your LS. After that, your on your own.
<_< Yeah claims don't hurt either
Id say don't have over 40 active members. At least on carby, all the rather large LSs usually end up failing. Less members and you get to know everyone and their tendences well. Whats made our LS great is overachievement with a strong dose of persistance.
No LS member is allowed to have a job, go to school or engage in social activities outside of FFXI.
