    Halp meee (Computer Problem)

Recently, as in the last 3 days, my screen randomly goes blank.

Not turns off, but it goes blank (as if you are turning on "Blank" screensaver). FF is still running in the background, all sounds are there, but Im as blind as stevie wonder.

Is it my monitor dying? pc dying? video card dying? or do I have some other problem I dont know about? >< I dont want this happening in dynamis, which it hasnt yet, but it's getting really annoying.

This happened to a friend of mine before, and it was because he installed some bad drivers for a new microphone (it was a USB one...dunno). He uninstalled those and it worked fine again.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

What type of comp do you have? My old compaq used to do that constantly. :/

Check your video card...then your monitor cable...then check the monitor...anyway you can replace either of these to see if you can narrow down the probelm?

ah it's one i had put together years ago. It's nearly 3 years old this PC, but I doubt it's that :\ I've never had a 3 year old machine start dying on me like this.

I think it's your eyes man. Go see a doctor.

When it goes black, is it like a flicker, does it come back? Or is the picture gone for a long time? Are you on a flat panel monitor? That sort of thing happens when it gets confused and resynchs. If you haven't installed anything different since it started happening, check the monitor cables.

If you have another monitor in the house, try plugging that in. It could be the card or the monitor that is on the fritz (I had a monitor cable port die on me once; card was fine, monitor was fine, but I could only use the analog output from the card for some reason).

You should try to isolate exactly which part is malfunctioning.

    my eyes zomg

It goes black, yes as a flicker, kinda like when you turn the TV on, it'll depop the screen then It comes back as solid black. I'm not using a flat panel monitor, using old crt style (funnily enough I was talking about getting flatpanel recently, a sign maybe?).

Unfortunately I dont really have another free monitor in the house >< I cant really narrow it down to that. I'm thinking it's the monitor/cable due to the fact I hear it click before the screen changes to black.

I havent installed anything new recently, I have however, noticed Im lagging alot.

That happening on a CRT probably means dying monitor.

Wafik, as mentioned, the first step is to find another monitor.

If it stops going blank, youve solved the problem.
If its still going blank, that means the monitor is probably fine, and could mean that its a VidCard, driver or possibly another issue.

Replacing the monitor would be the simpliest way to determine whats wrong.

What the first thing I would ask rather, is if you say it happens alot recently, what exactly do you do to fix the problem (temporarely) ?

The above question would greatly help narrow it down.

    Yes, hence 'replace'.

I kinda found out the problem >_>

Recently, the last 3 days, the sun is just blaring into my room and I swivelled the monitor roughly 70 degrees sideways, so its the monitor/cable. It was a sign anyway to dump my lumpy crt.

    Replace is vague.
