Ok so I was bazing on one char overnight so when i tried to log on my main this morning I was prompted with PoL update... ok no problem just make sure you do it on normal PoL. Restarted it after update and bamf

Any ideas or this happen to anyone else? first time this has happened =/

No, but apparently my computer no longer has the "Direct 3D" requirements to play the game. Wow, didn't know my software could just up in leave during a PoL updated.

I had this problem a long time ago. When I called SE's tech support they said.

Um... I think you might need to reinstall

Then I hung up.

But yea only way I got it to work again was completely uninstalling...

Same thing happened to me a while back, so I cant really log in normally.

roll back your display drivers even further, it's like back to the future

yup, ever since i installed Vista I get this error everytime there's a POL update, i have to install POL on another PC then copy the folder contents over my network to my PC, such a pain in the ass.

Don't load windower when grabbing update. That's what worked for me.

i'll be honest, the only reason i installed it was because i wanted to mess around w/ an OS thats relatively new (XP is old as shit), and flip3D intrigued me (can't wait until some folks create some new 3D themes though, since the GUI has full DX9/10 hardware support, you can make some cool shit, remniscent of those *nix 3D desktops

kinda pissed at the software support atm though, i'm running 5744, which is afaik the last RC before final build, and there are still a ton of programs that aren't compatible with it right out of the box, such as lolffxi

i still like it though

Several hours later I tried again to log in, and I didn't have a problem. I guess my computer needed a few hours to calm down or something...

i dont know much about computers but whenever i get something stupid that fucks with my pol/ffxi, i just do a system restore to the last save point and it usually works.

For some reason, on Server 2003 and Vista, the newest DirectX will cause Error code = 20008001 if you try to update a fresh install of Playonline (version 1) after installing DirectX 9.0c. It will ask you to install DirectX 8.1 or higher...

DirectX 9.0c might be causing other problems with Playonline as well. I reinstalled Server 2003 and installed DirectX 9.0a instead and didn't have any problems after that.
