Bestiary numbers

I was looking through the bestiary, and some of the monsters have numbers next to their names, i'm assuming that it counts down. What i don't know is why, do you get a special reward for killing a certain number of every monster?

sometimes you'll get info on areas, sometimes you'll get info on bazaar goods, and sometimes you'll get info on what they're rare drop is
