New Sony PS3 not in synch with older games
About 200 titles affected by glitch; gaming system, which went on sale Saturday in Japan, is crucial in Sony's battle with Microsoft and Nintendo.

TOKYO (Reuters) -- Sony said Tuesday its new video game console, the PlayStation 3, does not run about 200 PlayStation and PlayStation 2 software titles properly, the latest problem the electronics maker has run into in its cash-cow game business.

The PS3, which Sony (Charts) calls its most important strategic product of the year, went on sale in Japan on Saturday, setting the stage for a three-way showdown with Microsoft's (Charts) already available Xbox 360 and Nintendo's Wii.

Sony said audio features do not work on some software titles when played on the PS3, which is supposed to be compatible with games designed for its previous models, while some other titles do not work on the latest machine at all.

Shares in Sony closed up 0.9 percent at ¥4,730 ($40.05), underperforming a 1.64 percent gain in the Tokyo stock market's electrical machinery index but in line with Nintendo stock.

Industry specialists say the glitches appear to be the kind of hiccups that often plague console launches and are not likely to have a lasting impact on the PS3 business.

"There are always sorts of little problems at launch ... It may take some time to make everything compatible, but I don't think it's a huge problem," KBC Securities analyst Hiroshi Kamide said.

Indeed, Microsoft received customer complaints following its Xbox launch in Japan in 2002 that the console was scratching game discs, while Sony's PS2, which it released in 2000, had compatibility problems with PS games.

Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE), Sony's game unit, plans to fix the PS3 problems by offering online upgrades for system software, SCE spokesman Satoshi Fukuoka said.

Sony sold 88,400 units of the PS3 in the first two days of the Japan launch, clearing out most stores' stock, video game magazine publisher Enterbrain said Monday.

The PS3 will be launched in North America on Friday. Gamers in Europe must wait until March due to a glitch in commercial production of blue laser diodes, a key component of the game gear's Blu-ray high-definition DVD player.

The Tokyo-based electronics and entertainment conglomerate aims to ship 6 million units of the PS3 by March.

The original PS and PS2 have each sold more than 100 million units.

Sony, which has dominated the game market over the past decade, has packed the PS3 with its latest technology, including a Blu-ray player and the Cell microchip, dubbed a "supercomputer on a chip."

But the new machine's lifelike graphics and fast downloading of game software and video clips come at a price.

Sony sells a basic model for ¥49,980 ($424.90) in Japan, almost double the price of the Wii, which will be released in the United States on Sunday and Dec. 2 in Japan.

I lol'd so hard. I am glad I am not getting a PS3. However, every console sold had its own problems at launch. Just a warning to you guys buying it.

This is a common sony problem, and something that gets fixed. I think most of the readers know not to buy a Playstation at launch at all by now, and to wait until a few months after release. There are always bugs, and probably always will be. I'm waiting till about spring to get mine.

3) Could be a bunch of unimportant games

Propaganda is always a bad thing, understand this. At least in videogames.

If the thing sucks, it'll speak for itself. We can complain about its incredible low numbered launch because we can experience it right now, but aside from that, no one has a clue how the PS3 plays yet but want to pass judgement on it. If the Wii did the same thing, people would let it slide. This is called being a fanboy. As a gamer, not a fanboy, I let the facts be the most important decider of things, not who I want to win the 'gen-war'.

This is nothing. It's like complaining every PS3 came with bubble wrap already popped. It'll be fixed within 2 months of PS3's release and forgotten. It will also have no effect on it's sells. Stop making a big deal of nothing, it's kind of disgusting.

EDIT: Saying "glitchy" first-gen systems is even going too far. Glitchy indicates that is has many glitches. If this is it, then it's one of the better console releases in the past 10 years.

You do realize that the Nintendo Wii can't play DVD's

It's funny that none of us who enjoy Sony merchandise/items, are bringing up miniscule thing and makeing them huge stories.

Nintendo is so cheap that they can't give a DVD player ($20 extra) with there system or the fact that Nintendo itself has said that you have to wait till next year (generation) Wii to have the DVD player installed on it, and rebuy it LOL


So yes all gaming companies have hiccups, just wait till end of 2007 and we will see who will be top/laughing the hardest

Everytime I come onto to BG, and there is something wrong with Sony theres a thread created for it and ridiculed to the rafters for it and always end with OMFG I want Zelda.

It's called an extended warranty.. Buy one, enjoy your PS3 now, and when the next batch comes out smash your shit to pieces and go get one of those. Problem solved. I did the same thing with my XBOX 360 when the power cord glitch was found out, and with my PS2 when that massive disk read error problem occured. It's not an issue. And in any case, it's likely they'll just issue a patch for download that will fix it, not even a hardware problem.
