Student gets tased in UCLA library o.O

    The article: http://www.dailybruin.com/news/articles.asp?id=38958

CPD officers shot a student several times with a Taser inside the Powell Library CLICC computer lab late Tuesday night before taking him into custody.

No university police officers were available to comment further about the incident as of 3 a.m. Wednesday, and no Community Service Officers who were on duty at the time could be reached.

At around 11:30 p.m., CSOs asked a male student using a computer in the back of the room to leave when he was unable to produce a BruinCard during a random check. The student did not exit the building immediately.

The CSOs left, returning minutes later, and police officers arrived to escort the student out. By this time the student had begun to walk toward the door with his backpack when an officer approached him and grabbed his arm, at which point the student told the officer to let him go. A second officer then approached the student as well.

The student began to yell "get off me," repeating himself several times.

It was at this point that the officers shot the student with a Taser for the first time, causing him to fall to the floor and cry out in pain. The student also told the officers he had a medical condition.

UCPD officers confirmed that the man involved in the incident was a student, but did not give a name or any additional information about his identity.

Video shot from a student's camera phone captured the student yelling, "Here's your Patriot Act, here's your fucking abuse of power," while he struggled with the officers.

As the student was screaming, UCPD officers repeatedly told him to stand up and said "stop fighting us." The student did not stand up as the officers requested and they shot him with the Taser at least once more.

"It was the most disgusting and vile act I had ever seen in my life," said David Remesnitsky, a 2006 UCLA alumnus who witnessed the incident.

As the student and the officers were struggling, bystanders repeatedly asked the police officers to stop, and at one point officers told the gathered crowd to stand back and threatened to use a Taser on anyone who got too close.

Laila Gordy, a fourth-year economics student who was present in the library during the incident, said police officers threatened to shoot her with a Taser when she asked an officer for his name and his badge number.

Gordy was visibly upset by the incident and said other students were also disturbed.

"It's a shock that something like this can happen at UCLA," she said. "It was unnecessary what they did."

Immediately after the incident, several students began to contact local news outlets, informing them of the incident, and Remesnitsky wrote an e-mail to Interim Chancellor Norman Abrams.

The guy was asking for it by screaming at the cops. Did he deserve the taser? Probably not. But you cooperate with the cops or you suffer.

If he really did have a 'medical condition', who says he had the power to stand up? He was tased and put in handcuffs and asked to stand up right after, how could he?

Im not saying whether he deserved the first tase or not, but any normal officer would have spared the drama and just picked the kid up and carried him out. Im going to ask my boss' husband tomorrow who is a cop and see what he thinks about it just to get a perspective.

Either way id be interested in finding out how this ends up.

The student also told the officers he had a medical condition.
Lol if he really does they're finished, hard to defend that with a room full of people yelling stop, and a video.

    Forgot to put my input:

Friend of mine who goes to UCLA showed me this and asked me what I thought. First of all, the guy is a douche for being all uppity, but he probably shouldn't have gotten tasered since the article states he was already on his way out when the cops arrived, and drama didn't start until they touched him or whatever. I also thought it was very amusing that they kept trying to make him stand up, and when he didn't, they tasered him again. Hello? A taser fucks with your bodily functions so I doubt he would've been able to stand up after getting hit (MAYBE after the first one, but I doubt it). And they had 3-4 cops anyways, they could've just carried his ass out.

Also, I want to know what kinda phone that is, because that's damn good quality for a camera phone.

LOL. I don't think he deserved to get tazed. But just shut your mouth and cooperate after the first Taze.

After watching countless videos I now can pick out the clicking of a tazer in any crowd lol. Best part was hearing the click click click of the tazer immediately followed by "Here's your fucking patriot act". lol

It's a bit difficult to really see all of what was happening in that video. However, from the shocked and outraged reactions of so many of the onlookers I doubt all fault was with the victim. I think it's pretty crap that the cops would refuse to give their identification to the students that asked and even threaten to taser people that were near the incident.

I don't know that he should've just given in. If a cop told you to bend over and take it in the ass would you just do it? Maybe it's not that extreme, but they are fucking his rights in the ass, and I don't think that's right.

I hate to see this kinda shit. I despise abuse of power and have been on the wrong end of it too many times. I once had my wallet stolen out of my messenger bag. The guy used my credit card and we talked with the place where he used it. They had him on camera using my card. However, the police officer wouldn't take my report about the stolen wallet. He just called me a faggot to my face and told me it served me right for carrying a 'purse' and that I should go home with that in mind.

I think it should be illegal and/or a terminatable offense (within reason) to refuse to give identification/badge number as a uniformed P.O. on-duty.

Where I live its against the law for an officer to refuse to identify himself and all the police officers carry their own 'business cards' that they hand out when needed.

If a police officer refuses to identify himself you can call the police on him, cause its probably someone impersonating a police officer and thats bad.

Oh ya, that pussy in the video should of just stood up. I've seen 4 year olds that behave better.

He really should have just stood up, but the amount of times he was tased was getting ridiculous. There's a point where the cops need to realize maybe the tazer isn't the right course of action.

I can't pass judgement on either party though until you know all the details. Maybe he was behaving in a threatening matter or something. But if he was just walking out that was bullshit.

He was probably some jackass that always causes problems and they had dealt with him before.

You are suppose to follow direction and not resisit a police, especially when you know exactly why they are after you... he asked for it.

if he didn't scream and resist, instead go with the officer quietly.. I doubt it would have turned out this way.

it's like putting your hands in you pockets when a police told you to put them on top of your head.

in a school library or not.. police is police.

its that kind of mentality that lets police walk all over people and abuse their power. if the police approach you, you have a right to know why and you have a right to have their identification. and if they dont give it to you, you have a right to kick and scream and not go with them. that and LOL at the cops asking the guy to stand up AFTER they hit him with the taser that shit knocks you down its what it is designed to do. the electricity causes all the muscles in the body to contract and you lose control over them.
