Are movie people allowed to say something is based on a true story even if it's not?

I mean you could say anything is based on a true story...

RL scenario >> some people got stranded out in the woods, had a camp out with some s'mores.

Based on true story >> people stranded out in the woods were abducted by aliens who made s'mores out of them.

I don't think it looks that great, but i don't get scared by movies. I think i was scared when i first watched IT when i was like 5, but now if i saw it i'd think i was a pussy considering how lame it really is.



Only time i've ever really been scared was after i saw blair witch project, but it had nothing to do with the movie. Me my brother and my cousin saw it in the theater, and were all laughing throughout at how funny it was and not scary. But on the drive home to my cousins house where we were staying the night, driving down his road with a forest on our left and a grassy meadow on the right this fog came in out of nowhere. I mean one second it's clear as day, the next we cant' see 20 feet past the hood of the car. That kinda freaked us out a little.

The Coen brothers stated that Fargo was based on a true story, but it wasn't. They admitted they made it up. When it comes to film and television, you can lie because it's entertainment, look at Al Gore's movie.

I figured as much, but i wasn't sure if it was something like false advertising and they could get in trouble if they touted something as being true and it wasn't.
