Apparently after the winter storm hit them hard they wanted to compensate for it.

Part of the Bill of Rights is if you get kicked off a flight due to overbooking then you get $1,000 from them.

I don't understand in this day and age of computer reservations etc that they would ever overbook a flight. That's just plain stupid.

They overbook for the same reason a college over books a dorm. They assume people will not show/cancel/drop out etc and to maximize profits, they have to have every seat(room) filled, although in this case, seeing how they were paying out 1k$, it defeats the purpose.
