Experts: Video games not an addiction

Follow up to the previous thread regarding this, there's an excerpt in there saying if they did classify it as a psychological disorder it would "pave the way for insurance coverage for this illness."

How awesome would that be to call in sick for video game addiction.

I didn't realize that playing video games and then driving could be classified as under the influence.

Didn't read the link so forgive me if I am off, but I'd think MMOs would play a huge part in video gamers being considered "addicts" Some people are seriously changed after playing MMOs. Some people kill each other over CS, people don't go to work, they call in sick, go in sleepy because they were late camping some NM, and skip meals, sometimes several. Granted I'll never suck dick to play a game, but they're still pretty life changing to many.

You're pretty much agreeing with what I said regarding the MMOs, so yeah...

I didn't realize druggies and alcoholics could call in hungover/etc; why would gamers get special treatment?

Your logical reasoning is not welcome in these parts.

You're allowed to take medical leave for substance abuse addiction at pretty much every workplace in America. I've also had cool bosses in the past I could call in hungover

Either way it was a joke, no need to take it so literal. >.>

I don't understand how a company would let you take medical leave for substance abuse; wouldn't they fire you instead for use of drugs?

Not if you admit to having a problem before you get busted, i.e; show up to work drunk or high. I believe you're actually protected legally if that's the case since those are deemed psychological addiction problems.

There is a movement to classify "addiction" only in cases of substances with directly stimulate the pleasure centers of the brain in an effort to get rid of all this pseudo-addiction bullshit.

Is really all that needs to be written about addictions not tied to substance abuse. This can explain away things like 'gambling addition,' 'sex addiction,' and other kinds of "sally jessy raphael" addictions that simply involve the obsessive repetition of tasks at the expense of actually living a life.

What happened to the good old days where kids just OD'd on barbiturates and were grounded for a week after they were released from the hospital?

Only if you drive after playing Driver or GTA.

Video games are legal and last longer and therefore more cost-effective :D

Re: Experts: Video games not an addiction

Reminds me when my brother and I had a huge blowout with my drug addict parents about us playing games. We were like "Ok we're doing something that's really time consuming and costs $50 bucks a game but lasts us in the neighborhood of 40+ hours. Your doing something in the neighborhood of ~$100 and only lasts you the night and leaves you completely crippled, nevermind illegal. Survey says on which is worse......" Then they took the Nintendo for a week. Logic never wins.

Besides the worst thing gaming can do for you is make you fat, but that's what light beer is for. Well and the pseudo "gambling" style addiction that MMOs can bring you.
