Ok, so I know what female circumsicion is (the removal of the clitoris in pre-teen girls as a ritualistic rite of passage), but I thought this terrible and barbaric practice was kind of a "remote backwater african village" thing.

Then I read this:

A survey in 2000 said the practice was carried out on 97 percent of the country's women.

...this is Egypt - one of what I generally consider in my limited knowledge of Africa to be one of the more put-together, progressive-leaning (relatively), stable countries.

If female circumsision was merely the excising of the clitoral hood, they'd be comparable. The vast majority of the time it's a mutilation. Also, the "bans" on female circumcision in many third-world countries are meaningless. For example:

Central African Republic (43.4% prevalence of female circumcision, Type I and II)
In 1996, the President issued an Ordinance prohibiting FGC throughout the country. It has the force of national law. Any violation of the Ordinance is punishable by imprisonment of from one month and one day to two years and a fine of 5,100 to 100,000 francs (approximately US$8-160). No arrests are known to have been made under the law.

Guinea (98.6% prevalence of female circumcision, Type I, II and III)
FGC is illegal in Guinea under Article 265 of the Penal Code. The punishment is hard labor for life and if death results within 40 days after the crime, the perpetrator will be sentenced to death. No cases regarding the practice under the law have ever been brought to trial.

Are you joking? There's not even a comparison between the two, to any degree. Yes, there are some places where just the clitoral hood is removed. However, it is much more prevalent to remove the entire clitoris and much of the labia. It is common practice to stitch the entire fucking vagina shut, leaving on a teeny-tiny hole for urination, menstruation, and getting fucked. It is common practice to put skin-burning, corrosive materials into the vagina in the interest of tightening it. Don't let the name fool you; "female circumcision" is a very PC, sweet name that's given to female gential mutilation (FGM), or female genital cutting (FGC). It is, plain and simple, torture.

Perhaps if they lopped off the entire head of the dick and took the balls too, it might be comparable.

For the record, I don't support male circumcision either.
