Finally got my router set up, still have some timeout issues though. However, now I cannot get connected to POL/FFXI. I get to the Connecting to POL/Verifying login stuffs and it just hangs there. halp.

managed to get to the point right after the ToS agreement and stalls out in the middle. starting to hate this and wishing for my dialup again

I live in the boonies. only choice is dial-up or satellite. we were using dialup until my folks' business needed highspeed for the accountant and such. so we got 1.5 mbps connection with wildblue. right now it's kinda hit or miss with this router, but straight connection is fine. would do with the straight connect but we have 2 computers.Originally Posted by Koga
I think the cheap belkin router i got is the problem, i'll have to find one that is more compatible. Ipissed that I bought this router and the wireless usb hookups and none of it works well. I can't even get the wireless to detect the router and they're both belkin.
pretty sweet for web surfing and downloads when it's working right. wish it'd connect to FFXI better, and stay connected. >.>
TCP Ports: 25, 80, 110, 443, and 50000 - 65535
UDP Ports: 50000 - 65535
Make sure none of those ports are blocked by your router.
Your probably timing out when FFXI does its version check.
at&t connections suck, wildblue is AT&T, blame them... yep its totally AT&T's fault...(and i work there... but not for wildblue)
I fixed it, had to use my browser to go into the router and set some things up, and to remove NAT from hiding my computer. now it works, pretty well too.

not the best but a huge leap from my dialup that would connect @ 24kbps.
When your latency is half your download, you know theres something wrong.
it's satellite internet, it will always have that latency. It's only there when I first start a download or open a new webpage, after that initial lag it's great.Originally Posted by Snowknight26

haha ouch starting to make me think i might wana switch to cable
do you like insecure networks? all your cc info, personal info, soc sec #, etc will be easily available to anyone that wants them thats in your neighborhood on cable...Originally Posted by killerx
I'm curious where you are getting this from? Yes cable does share bandwidth, generally from your neighborhood/apartment complex/etc, but that doesn't make it any more or less secure than other broadband connections. You are still going to be on your own personal network and can use a firewall/etc.Originally Posted by Killgannon
Edit: And to the op, like others have said, the latency is your problem with satellite internet. I would play on dial up before I would play on a satellite connection.

I hate shitty cable
I figured out the problem had to do with the Firewall in the router. It's actually a lot better playing games vs. dial up now. Also, I didn't really have a choice in the matter since it's required for the accountant, and with business stuffs, so yea.Originally Posted by OctavoGilgamesh
