Not exactly the FFXI version but soul flayers are based on a D&D creature called Illithids. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illithid They are copy righted so this is the SE copypasta version.

If you read the wiki or play some D&D games, it explains their TP moves and their True Sound/ability/spell detection being that they are psionic. This was updated on the ffxi wiki as well.
I'm guessing the black magic has to due with their previous FF incarnations.According to the D&D Monster Manual, they "are so insidious, diabolical, and powerful that all denizens of the dark fear them. They bend others to their will and shatter enemies' minds." They have 4 tentacles surrounding a lamprey-like mouth, which they use to grab and subdue prey in order to consume their foe's brain. They are highly intelligent, and employ powerful psionic abilities in order to charm and subdue other beings, as well as powerful magic.
Blue Mages are constantly striving for more power. Even after that power ultimately begins to destroy them. Moreover, they technicaly already know how to wield the power of the elements - Maelstrom, Ice Break, Firespit, etc. So Black Magic isn't much of a stretch for them. After all, learning the spells and abilities of vicious monsters has to be more difficult than reading a spell from a scroll. Sorry, BLMs.
Why can prishe use benediction and hundred fists and have mnk h2h skill and use whm only spells while having more def than the pld in your pt!? Answer that and I think you've answered your question ;3
all FFXI soulflayers were humans (or elvaan or tarutaru, or etc.) at somepoint?
Spoiler: Cause she's 10'000 years old and doesn't believe in a level cap.Originally Posted by LinktheDeme
Yep. Same would go for flan I think.Originally Posted by Tajin
Because upon turning into a monster their spell book increases. This is also why beastmen have their own arsenal of shit to dump on us.
How so? I don't know of any backstory on Flan's.Originally Posted by Sagacious Sundi

I know blu mages turn into Flayers/Flans for more power / due to losing their sense of self and sucumbing to the beast within, but the question was specifically if they're blue, why black!? I guess FF doesn't explain it.
Because once you go black, there's no turning back. Or something like that.
Raubahn was bad-ass in those last cutscenes!
And I never could figure it out either I guess they're just magically inclined even after losing sense of their self
They don't do it by choice their body becomes unstable and mutates into itOriginally Posted by Lordwafik
I've wondered about this myself. I'm guessing it has to do with the fact that several of the monster types we can learn blue magic from (and thus, whose souls we absorb) are basically black mages themselves (hecteyes, ahriman, imps, worms, ghosts, magic pots, flan, soulflayers). I can't think offhand of any "native" white mages or summoner monster types that would push degenerate blue mages in a different direction of magic.
