    Question about the graphical capabilities of FFXI

    Quick question but why would it be difficult to near impossible to give ffxi a grapcial overhaul? sorry for the silly question but its something ive been thinking and alot of people have told me it wont be happening.

    I wanted to be in before the PS2 Limitations.™

    You can force Anti-aliasing, 8x Anisotropic filtering, use uncompressed textures, extend the drawdistance with a windower plugin, etc which makes it quite a bit prettier though on PC at least if you aren't already though.

    By making your 3d resolution higher than your background resolution or is there some other way?

    Most have a graphics cards have util that comes with the driver that let's you force it.

    Its there, probably just in a different place.

    as a side note, I feel that all FFXI would need is a higher resolution / color depth set of textures and possibly some better shadows with multiple sources

    side note: this also anti-aliases your overlay graphics (including font)

    this can make the game nigh unreadable if you're not careful.

    -> to the OP, graphics overhaul feasibility depends more on what you want, dynamic single pass light/shadow ala crytek or even the doom3 engine? not possible.

    better sky textures in konschtat/on gear? quite possible but time intensive.

    higher poly counts? possible but even *more* time intensive.

    more models on-screen at once? possible but unfair to ps2 so not likely.

    But really, how hard would it be to copy and paste the code for the skies in ToAU areas into the old areas? Treasures skies put the old zones to shame.

    well, I had been directing time intensive more at better gear textures than the actual sky/environment textures.

    there's really no excuse for how konsch. looks during thunder weather anymore, I agree.

    (or that einherjar staging area uses the same wiremodel as a certain favorite hecteyes nm's trigger area)

    SE Could make a patch thats d/l able by PC users for better graphics ~ Not affecting the PS2's limitations...>:3...

    Friend of mine that quit the game came up with a good idea....He said he'd come back to the game if when your holding a 'Flame Sword' its really a flaming blade with a handle ~ That kinda graphics would rock >.>!

    I can't be the only one who dislikes the generally cartoonish look of wow, can I? I mean, there's a ton of shine and gloss and pretty colors but alot of the models are .. blocky. and there's not alot of subtlety to the textures (plain might be the word I'd use for many of them)

    I'd take less shiny in exchange for cleaner looking textures/models anyday.

    The cutscenes in the older warcraft games were cartoons if I remember correctly?

    I don't think that there are any technical issues, just that it's not worth the development time required to redo the graphics.

    Seriously, it would be nice to have that, a Flame Sword with flames on it that you can actually see. But if it means having the cartoonish graphics of WoW, {Thanks for the offer but i'll have to pass.}

    Anti-aliasing has zero effect with FFXI.

    Correct.

    You can attempt to simulate anti-aliasing but card drivers that 'force' anti-aliasing does not effect FFXI.

    works fine at making the overlay all blurry as hell!

    but yeah, just oversample.
