Nooo! Weapon X! Brian Dawkins is easily the second best safety in the NFL, behind Mr. Lynch of course.

do ed reed and adrian wilson not exist?
John Lynch overshadows all.Originally Posted by tyven
I'd put Ed Reed, Roy Williams ahead of Lynch in THIS day and time. Lynch is a sentimental favorite due to him playing sooo long and how hard hit hits, but as far as being all around I have to give that to Reed. Punt return, Kick return, can get a pick at any time and can hit.
But since we are doing the old man sentimental love thing lets talk about how Favre is the best QB in the NFL in '06 and '07. We can't forget about how Jerry Rice in Oakland was by far the best WR in the NFL. I understand the sentimental choices but i'm just being realistic.

Yes, I am biased, and no, you won't change my mind.

i would say polamalu rounds out the top 5 behind ed reed, adrian wilson, darren sharper and dawkins, troy isnt much for coverage, gambles too much. i would say hes a bit better than roy williams and sean taylor who i would say are 6th and 7th respectively. darren sharper is easily the most underrated safety, the guy is a pure ball hawk. put him in a secondary with a run stuffer like roy williams and it would be the best safety duo ever seen.Originally Posted by Anyway
Ed Reed is far and away #1.
The most balanced safeties are the best--ones that can cover, hit hard, and basically control the defensive backfield.
Brian Dawkins
Darren Sharper
Troy Polamalu
Adrian Wilson
(In that order)
Just a few names that come to mind. In my opinion, those 5 are the top 5.
EDIT: Bob Sanders is climbing, fast. I'm sure everyone notices that without him, the Colts are one of the worst defenses in the NFL. With him, they are exponentially better. Although he's not asked to cover, he still does a great job in pass defense, and he's easily one of the best run-stopping safeties. He reminds me of a younger, faster Brian Dawkins.
Gtfo. Roy Williams is easily better than Polamalu, Sharper, and maybe even Wilson who's stats are inflated because he plays on a horrible defense.Originally Posted by Tyr

Talk to me when Roy Williams actually learns how to cover.Originally Posted by Deejay
Sharper, Reed, and Dawkins are imo the most complete safeties, close behind is Polamalu, and a bit farther is Adrian Wilson. Roy Williams is just another Sean Taylor.
sean taylor gives up more touchdowns!
Roy Williams isn't that great at pass coverage, but he rarely gets beaten, he had just as much or more INT's than all 3 other Safeties in 06' and is easily the best or one of the best open field tacklers at that position, hes been in every probowl for the past 4 years (which means jack to me but someone else brought that up with polumalu). Him not being named among the elite is kinda dumb to me.Originally Posted by Tyr
well i live and breathe dallas cowboys football and a couple years ago i would have said roy is the #2 safety in the league, but all last year and in week 1 this year he got continuously abused through the air. this was really exposed in week 2 of the 05 season when he was smoked twice in the last 5 minutes by santana moss and dallas ended up with one of the most crushing defeats i can remember. i dont fault roy for his coverage, he had 5 picks last year but gave up a ton of touchdowns, i blame coaches, they need to be using him to his strong points i.e. pressuring quarterbacks, stuffing the run, NOT covering tight ends and helping corners over the top. im hoping wade phillips gets this under control, and learns to just blitz roy every play, thats what he did his first two years in the league, and thats when he was really at the height of his success.
Where's the Week 3 picks and discussion? Niners over Steelers.
