low FPS on new computer with Geforce 8500

Got a new computer Intel Core 2 quad CPU @ 2.4ghz. It has a 8500 GT geforce. (I know it's not the best, but it should run FFXI smoothly.) Runs Vista, didn't have any problem getting FFXI or windower to work. Whenever I start up FFXI though, I'm having serious lag issues. Drops to 20 FPS as soon as anything mobile apears on screen, and did a Fafnir a few nights ago on 3 fps. (Which is when I decided playing this way was a bad idea, which brings us here, because I still have no idea how to fix it.)

I tried installing newer video drivers, older video drivers, hotfixes, and today I'm planning on installing XP. (Also contacted SE support but other then recommending other video drivers that didn't work either, I got nothing.) This message is basically a cry for help to anyone with similar problems. Any tips, clues, or similar stories and ideas are appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Vista and the 8x00 series Nvidia cards do not work well.

Your best bet would be to dual boot Windows XP and Vista.

correction: your best bet would be to completely get rid of vista and use XP.

Going to have to third that and say reinstall XP. Exact same thing happened with Daahan and his new computer, and the remedy was installing XP.

Having to use vista myself for work, if you have a totally maxed out machine vista flies, but the biggest factor in its speed is your ram, you need 2 GB+ to make it even worth considering an upgrade to vista (and even then I'd still say no), also I've had a lot of bad luck with those intel quad cores that I've seen shipping on computers with Vista.

I run vista ultimate 32, on a amd 6000+ clocked a 3.0ghz and 4gb of ram, with a 8800 gts video card. Not even besieged causes lag. So you can overcome the nvidia and vista combo, but do you want to pay that much for your computer?

XP is much more cost effective, I just use Vista so I can figure out where the heck they put everything in case a client has it. @@

Re: low FPS on new computer with Geforce 8500

Did some testing yesterday and have come to the conclusion that....

AMD+ Vista+ 8 series card = Ok (as I said many times, the game ran at max settings with no lag)
    Intel + Vista+ 8 series card = Pooo
    Intel + XP + 8 Series card = ok

Tested with 2 AMD systems and 3 Intel systems....

I currently have an Intel system and this game ran better on my Pentium 4 1.8Ghz with a 64MB GeForce2

If you have an Intel system get XP. If you have an AMD system get XP anyway, Vista is very lol

The same kind of thread has been posted several times.

I'm going to make a sticky thread: Nvidia and Vista don't mix.
