    Large Hadron Collider...

Anyone read up on it? Know what it is? What its all about?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Large_Hadron_Collider

Just kinda curious what the general consensus on this thing is... Read it for more info, tbh I'm a huge fan of science but not a huge fan of this thing at all. Something about the risks associated.. heh.

Something about knowing there's scientists somewhere planning on starting something like this in... 6 months, being powerless to stop it even if you wanted to, scares me, like, seriously does. Maybe not just THIS particular instance, but generalized. More than the threat of global warming, terrorism, monsters, what have you, this is one of my primal fears.

    Unfounded? What do you think?

    Re: Large Hadron Collider...

I've been excited for this since I saw some discovery channel program about it well over a year ago. I really doubt any disasters will happen from it, and the potential to understand all that fancy physics stuff is pretty cool.

I hope something awful happens so I'll have something to watch on my new TV.

    Re: Large Hadron Collider...

When we developed nuclear weapons some scientists thought we would set the atmosphere on fire. Didn't happen. Russia scaled back the Tsar hydrogen bomb for the same reason but still dropped it at half strength (About 50 megatons instead of 100). But if we didn't push to understand how nuclear interactions work we might have abandoned the idea of nuclear power. Obviously weaponizing not the only way to go about understanding something but it was the initial push.

Everything has risk and the chance it will create a sustainable black hole is pretty small. The knowledge we would get out of running the hadron collider outweighs the risk.

I keep reading it as that as well. ;/

This thing does seem pretty interesting though. The chance of it creating a mini black hole sounds cool, but I assume that would be bad. >.>

    Re: Large Hadron Collider...

As with previous particle accelerators, people both inside and outside the physics community have voiced concern that the LHC might trigger one of several theoretical disasters capable of destroying the Earth or even the entire Universe. This has raised controversy as to whether any such risks outweigh the potential benefits of constructing and operating the LHC.
the 2 bolded statements are pretty hilarious in the same paragraph

hmmm possible scientific discovery or destroying the universe

    Lets go for it!

If something on the order of 'awful' happens, we'd all be gone pretty quick, and potentially so would our current universe

    Re: Large Hadron Collider...

the risks are vanishingly small; but like all potential catastrophes it gets bad press. and for god's sake; there's alot of stuff that could (and probably would) go wrong other than destruction of the universe.

more to the point: this isn't any different than any other large colliders that have been produced before - it's just *Bigger*. the same issues that the others potentially had, this one does too; etc etc

anyway: LHC here we come! at least there's one part of the world that still values science.

    Re: Large Hadron Collider...

Every time a new collider capable of high-energy particle experiments goes online, someone's vag leaks about the end of the world.

Hasn't happened yet, doubt it ever will.

Even if it does, not like we'll live long enough to give a shit after something goes wrong.

I wonder what "falling" into a black hole feels like.

Eh, go for it. Wiping out humanity would be a kindness to Earth and most of the universe, if we went out in our current state. The advancements in science is worth the risk.
