EVE: The ultimate clusterfuck patch of all time.

I was jalous of my collegue that plays EVE online. (Space MMORPG for the noobs.) They get a patch that updates the entire graphic engine, giving it seriously amazing graphics. He made fun of my FFXI graphics in the last month, and yesterday patch day was there. Then this happened this morning, and exploded on the EVE forums like a atomic bomb.

Basically, people who updated yesterday with the patch got their boot.ini file deleted. An entire community that can't start up their PC's anymore because of a patch. Awesome.

I'm computer dumb. How do you repair that mistake if people have tried to boot without that file?

Boot.ini is the file windows uses to boot up. It tell's the PC what all the partitions are etc etc. Without it, it won't start. However, FFXI probably has a boot.ini too somewhere. It's a fairly normal file for programs so they know what to do at start up. In any case, EVE has this file too, but what happens in the patch install is it directly deletes the boot.ini file in the root IF you installed the game on your c: drive. This means it doesn't delete the file from the game, but the windows file. So anyone who installed the game on his D: drive didn't have any problems probably. People with XP and installed on C: don't have a clue why their comp didn't start up this morning.

CCP can't fix this, but you can find some microsoft info on how to edit your boot.ini file.

I play eve, or should I say "played". I paid in 1 yr chunks for 2 yrs and then quit, but my subscription doesn't run out until Feb, even though I haven't played in 8 months. That aside, in case I decided to resume the game or sell/donate my character or something, I continually log on when my 3rd party app reminds me to go set a new skill to train.

I really only knew about the patch because I tried to sign on and set a skill 2 hours into the down time. Thank god it wasn't during this.


Edit: I recind my comment, following the link to the EVE thread shows that this doesn't affect Vista, which I'm on, so I'd have been safe.

You can use the recovery console on the Windows CD (XP at least, offhand) to generate a new boot.ini.

I laughed hard when I heard about it. Fortunately I downloaded the 1GB EVE setup file that included premium graphics with it, so.. sucks for the other people I guess.

Edit: It apparently only fucks with your boot.ini file if you don't have SP2 or later? THAT'S WHAT YOU GET FOR NOT UPDATING YOUR OS LAWL.

Edit2: Rooooooooooofl, nevermind. Everything but Vista is fair game to CCP's stupidity.
