My cousin got a free 3d screening thanks to being a UMiami student. And apparently its amazing
I just saw a little bit of it (work in theatre, had to make sure it plays right) and I wasn't impressed. Scenery looks great, but the movement is awkward. Only saw part of a battle at the beginning and it made me think the only thing that was missing was the ending theme of Benny Hill.
That battle at the beginning has most of the (short) akward 48fps moments, which is a bit unlucky. In total, they make under 5% of the entire movie. There are also different "stages" of how the 48fps moments (is there any clever word for it?) impact. The worst are the mentioned, which are instantly recognizable and trade the "cinema" effect for a tv on steroids. Luckily, those are as mentioned, very few. Then there are some scenes, that look like they are playing too fast. Not as extreme as in the old action movies (like Bond), were they speed up the car chases etc. I noticed maybe a handful of them.
Most of the time tho, it just feels more fluid. It could be that the effect is bad in 2D but that "fluidness" does wonders in 3D.
Watch the racial/derogatory comments folks(ie Rhyis) Hobbits are people too.
shutup bubbleboy
I love and hate you at the same time.
Desired effect accomplished.
Just saw it and it was beautiful... fuck the haters. Gonna see it 2 more times probably, another time for sure. I can't wait till next movie already x.x
kotaku put up a piece about how it's like a crappy video game, lol
As much as I hate to agree with Kotaku, that is exactly what I was thinking during many of the action scenes. I absolutely hated the 48fps and it broke any immersion I might've had with the film. Everything seemed cheesy and the movie was robbed of all the drama and weight of the LoTR trilogy. I'm surprised my face didn't cramp from how hard I was cringing at the sled scenes.
Mind you I haven't seen the movie, but I'm confused how a higher frame rate can possibly make something look less realistic. It's like saying standard television looks more realistic than HDTV.
from what I gather it's more realistic, in the sense of, it looks more like actors on a set and camera movements, and effectively serves as an uncanny valley like effect
I think some of it is you've gotten used to how movies look, so if it doesn't look like that, it seems unnatural. Imagine if the next big action movie used realistic gunfire and explosions (or lack of, since much fewer things explode into fireballs in real life), it would feel fake because it was outside of expectations.
Disclaimer: I went into this with a biased mindset. I was not a fan of the "upgrade" from film to digital, and don't care for what I see to be gimmicks in movies lately, using 3D or other things in lieu of a great story.
The movie was fucking amazing. I just got home from watching it and just wow...Everything about it was beautiful. The Characters were great, the FX were really good. I think I'mma see this atleast 3 more times in IMAX
People are full of shit about 48fps, that movie was fucking art in motion. Some blurring on fast camera movement, but still fucking bea-utiful
Was better then Fellowship for sure
