The the stone lights up and slows her descent and she floats down into the arms of Pazu, an orphan boy. He too has an interest in Laputa and so they set off together to find the legendary floating city.

was just surfing the networks here in aus and noticed this movie on the SBS channel,

I was constantly drawing comparisons to the layout of the floating city to ffxi's sky, even down to the grounds keepers,

    anyone else seen this movie?

Floating castles is a pretty common theme in japanese games and anime anyway. Seems like theres always some sort of evil floating castle, fortress, island, airship, etc. I recall noticing some similarities as well when I watched that movie a while back, but it didn't feel like a big deal at the time.

    SIMILAR topic, slightly related.

Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi: first Ep. The 4 lynchpins of the shopping arcade ARE the four chinese skygods, but i get a kick out of the bird being a pelican.

Laputa is HUGE. There are sections of the city totally submerged in water, it really is quite mysterious. In comparison I feel Sky in FFXI is quite small (and.... empty.)

Good anime/film, I highly recommend people to watch it. In Japanese preferably, the English one got destroyed by silly one liners added in places and CONSTANT music, whereas good use of silence was used in the Japanese one.

when sky was first release, Japanese players nicknamed it Laputa.

but yes, floating castles is a common theme. Laputa... Utena. Kam'lanaut is Dios, ect.

Flying cities are pretty common themes in a lot of anime. But there's flying cities, Then there's Flying moss covered Cermet Cities that have been uninhabited for centuries, only maintained by robot Groundskeepers until a small group of adventurers come to them to learn about a secret history.

Sorry for tables, will convert to image links at request.

FFXI needs a Squirrelfox though, like in Laputa:http://www.naucon.org/teto.jpg

Squirrelfox was in Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind.
Speaking of which, that movie had black chocobos!

I think you could safely say all of the Miyazaki movies took common fairytale/Sci-fi/Japanese traditional themes and compiled, distilled and condensed them like Disney did to old European fairytales and Tolkien to old nordic sagas heavily influencing entire generations' perception of what fantasy lands should be like.
    Wonderful stories regardless.

Haha, that's awesome. SE likes to borrow things, so it's very possible.

My interest is piqued in this show.

Oh god, we need some cutscenes of Kam'lanaut riding on the hood of a car while shirtless and acting like a perv.

I'm sure it was, I'm positive there was a JP sky LS called Laputa on Asura too back in 2004 or something. I remember going to sky the first time and talking about how much it's like Laputa.
