On another forum I post on, someone started a thread about nasty food. He started off with

Okay, thats pretty nasty, but then these came along.

Balut - A chicken or duck egg, with a partially grown embryo in it, which is cooked then eaten in the egg. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balut - pictures included.

Surströmming - Fermented(i.e rotten) Baltic Herring.

The herring is caught in spring, when it is in prime condition and just about to spawn. The herring are fermented in barrels for one to two months, then tinned where the fermentation continues. Half a year to a year later, gases have built up sufficiently for the once cylindrical tins to bulge into a more rounded shape.

The eating of the ortolan has ethical eating groups baying for blood. First, it is caught with a net in the forest. Taken alive, its eyes are poked out and the bird is put in a small cage. It's then force-fed oats, millet and figs until it has swollen to four times its normal size. Then the bird is drowned alive in fine cognac. Then, it's roasted whole, in an oven at high heat, for six to eight minutes. Once it reaches the table, a napkin is placed over the eater's head. The technique of eating the ortolan is to put the whole bird into the mouth, with only the beak protruding. Here sadism mingles with masochism. The first taste as you crunch on the bird is the brandied flesh and fat. Then, the bitterness of the guts follow and finally, as the tiny, delicate bones are being chewed on, they will lacerate the diner's gums, with the salty taste of the bleeding gums mingling with the richness of the fat and the bitterness of the organs. Chewing the ortolan takes approximately 15 minutes.

ive heard many people say that balut was actually pretty good. they sell like hotdogs in the philippines

and i have eaten century eggs before and its good. tastes a little weird at first but its tasty with rice

I used to eat balut alot when I was little. Well, I actually just get the yellow part, and gave the duck to my mom or someone. Usually ate it with a lemon + pepper/salt mix, and it tasted damn good.

century eggs are used in chinese food also and they are delish. put in rice/congee/porridge (w/e your term of choice is) with shredded pork is probably my favorite chinese breakfast.

Balut just looks gross, but it sells quite a bit when the balut vendor comes, so I imagine it isn't too bad overall.

Well, here in south Jersey we have our own delicacy. Ok, maybe not a delicacy, but it's a common food for us.

Blue Crabs! Between the months of May through September I'm rarely home. I bought a boat JUST for crabbing. A recipe in my family has been past from father to son since my great great grandfather got off the boat in Jersey from Munich.

Crabs are bugs. I know they're shell fish, but they look and act like bugs. They're garbage pickers of the bay floor. Funny thing is, you look exactly like one when eating it.

They're gross to anyone who doesn't live on the east coast and if you do -- shit, it's as common as corn and green beans. So are clams, which ultimately looks like a booger on a rock, but hell, I eat them while I catch them, right there in the breaking surf raw.
