If youre new to it, just use Windows Movie Maker, can do everything youre looking for. Then just encode the end result to shrink the size if you want.

Somehow I think Windows Movie Maker would make more sense as the first step.

    Hello.
I think that Windows Movie Maker will only dull your senses, to be honest.
I recommend Adobe Premiere Elements as a starting point, and by starting point, I mean a whole lot of videos for months and months. x.x

After that, you can move to Adobe Premiere Pro, and Adobe Aftereffects, mastering those two would make you able to make the best of the best videos ever. =o

But then again, that is just my opinion.

P.S Windows Movie Maker will blur your videos a little, while the Adobe thingies can keep the original quality and compress the video to a reasonable size. (Super high quality video, 4 minutes, 70 MBs, I think that's nice.)

I think Windows Movie Maker is an excellent starting point. I made videos with WMM for a long while, before eventually moving onto Adobe Premiere Pro.

Adobe premiere is extremely user unfriendly, much like all Adobe products.

"Throw them in the deep end" approach has never taught anyone well, sure it'll open your eyes to what you could learn, but it's too intimidating and is more likely to make you give up before you've started.

Windows movie maker is very simple and very user friendly to make simple videos with nice transitions and music. I suggest you start here, go with baby steps untill you can use the big guns. Also remember, adobe isn't the be all and end all to multimedia and computing. There's Vegas, there's Final Cut Pro, etc.

premiere element will alittle easier to learn to use, but pro version might a little bit hard. But to me, I never able learn how to use after effects, one of the reason is that my window region is jp due to play FFXI in jp client which cause the adobe AE interface become all japanese words
