    Automatic Updates...

    Is there anyway to turn this shit off? I don't mind the updates downloading by themselves, but I'll restart when I'm damned ready. And when I click restart later it prompts me again every 5 minutes.

    Pretty sure you can take off the automatic restarts in the settings. Been awhile since I did it, but I know it's there.

    This is for XP Home, Pro version has another solution.

    Copy the text below into Notepad. Save it with a .reg extension. Open and confirm that you want to copy the data into your registry.

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Win dows\WindowsUpdate\AU]
    "RebootRelaunchTimeoutEnabled"=dword:00000000
    "NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers"=dword:00000001

    Edit: You'll have to ctrl+alt+del and kill explorer.exe for the changes to take effect, or restart. You wont have this pop up again after this tho.

    Re: Automatic Updates...

    I'm nab with computers so I'm not exactly sure how to save i as a .reg, don't know what to name the file, and have no clue where in the registry to put it. I as looking around on google and found this

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555444
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \Software\Policies \Microsoft\Windows \WindowsUpdate\AU

    Change the "NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers" DWord value to the required number.

    0 = False (Allow auto-reboot)
    1 = True (Disallow auto-reboot)

    Save and restart Windows Operating system.
    but in my registry, after windows there is no "WindowsUpdate" folder

    It looks like that article only applies to pre-SP2 XP. Do what the above poster said. To save a notepad entry as a registry file, just do a file -> Save As.. and name the file "updatefix.reg" and save it to your desktop. Then just double click the file, it will ask you to confirm changes to the registry, hit ok and you're done.

    Re: Automatic Updates...

    To stop this service, open [Command Prompt] (Start>Run>cmd>Enter) and type the following command sc stop wuauserv. This will not prevent Automatic Updates from starting at the next boot. So don't worry, you'll keep getting Windows updates. Just don't forget to restart eventually.
    That'll stop it bugging you temporarily on XP Pro.

    question in an appropriate thread questioning shitty windows dialogs:

    Any way to turn off the stupid End Task thing that comes up when a program doesn't close properly?

    I agree this can be annoying, but its a useful tool when troubleshooting problems.

    If its a consistent problem try Google and search for "blah.exe" hangs on exit, or "blah.dll" hangs on shutdown. I used to get that every time I closed IE, turns out Yahoo toolbar was causing the problem. Use it to your advantage and get the problem solved. Its way better then the BSoD...
