    I'm definitely inclined to agree with aurik. My goldsmithing sub was done pre/during the inflation, and I actually profited from sitting in rabao and desynthing mythril earrings into ingots for a couple days on end by buying them from NPC and selling on the AH. Got 3 levels of skill of it as well,but skillups happened easily 1/3 the rate of synthing.

    Just tried my first desynth for skillup post-60 just for shits and giggles...did 6 dance shoes desynths because, hell, I'm losing enough already, I can spare a couple for laughs...I don't have the stomach for more desynths blowing up versus at least the 7k from NPCs.

    I just want some clarification~

    If my natural skill is 45, and I am skilling up on a 52 cap synth, would I get the lower skill up rate? I am uncertian if the lower skill up rate is based on my natural skill being 50 or above, or the synth skill cap being 50 or above.

    Breaks can only give skillups within 5 natural levels of your craft skill. So, any synth above 50 that breaks will not give you a skillup chance.

    Skillup quantites are based on your natural skill vs craft cap. So crafting something 52+ should give you the remote chance for 0.3.

    One theory that I have always had is that every synth/desynth is structured the exact same and has 5 possible outcomes, and could explain for the % variances that Aurik mentioned in the OP:

    Break
    NQ
    HQ1
    HQ2
    HQ3

    For synths that have only one actual HQ result, the HQ1-HQ3 are all the same. Take Scorpion Harness for example. It could be structured like this:

    Break
    NQ - Scorpion Harness
    HQ1 - Scorpion Harness +1
    HQ2 - Scorpion Harness +1
    HQ3 - Scorpion Harness +1

    Obviously there would be no way to prove if this is actually true using a synth with only one HQ result, since you could in theory be hitting the 1/16 HQ3 possibility but never actually know since the result is still the same anyway. You would have to use a synth that has 2 HQ results as the basis for proving this theory.

    which is a 2:1 Femur:Shell ratio. I haven't done enough desynthing on Shell Shields to come up with any evidence to support my theory, but it's a pretty good synth to use. What would be a good sample size to use? 100? 500?

    I had done the same gap on tiger leather to sub for bone. Got two .4. Break rate was absolutely horrible, i'm talking 90%. I really dont recommend it. I only plowed through the breaks because the alternatives for skillups were far more expensive.

    Break rate was bad, but bearable. (maybe 1/6 success? i used advanced support; might've just gotten lucky with successes) A success meant almost a guaranteed skillup. Since holy waters are so cheap, I didn't mind at all. That was the only .4 i got, as soon as i hit 40 it dulled down to .3/.2/.1s.

    break synth info is already in the op:

    For any craft above your natural craft skill below 50:
    - somewhere between 66% and 75% chance to skill-up on a successful synth
    - somewhere between 66% and 75% chance to skill-up on a broken synth if your natural skill is no more than 5 below the recipe cap

    For any craft above your natural craft skill 50 or above:
    - somewhere between 25% and 33% chance to skill-up on a successful synth
    - somewhere between 25% and 33% chance to skill-up on a broken synth if your natural skill is no more than 5 below the recipe cap

    Just a suggestion, since I skimmed past it 2 times, once before I posted and once after you quoted and bolded it because it wasn't mentioned in the first sentence (and I tend to ignore bold in quotes since it can be carried over from the quote)

    aurik, is there a skill up "penalty" if you break the natural cap with support/items? I never thought there was but just went 0/12 on skill ups as a level 50 so just curious.

    edit: nm I'm leveling on a mule account with a friend and it just dawned on me he may not have turned in the item to exceed 50. thats annoying

    double edit: 50 item was turned in, just shitty luck i suppose

    No penalty is apparent from my experience.
    0/12 at 50+ happens infrequently.
